Claude's Obituary

Claude Smitherman Jr, 67, passed away on August 27, 2025, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. Born on April 16, 1958, in Aliquippa, he remained deeply rooted in the community that shaped his life.

A proud graduate of Aliquippa High School, Claude was known for his athleticism and love of basketball during his school years. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army. From October 9, 1979, to September 24, 1986, Claude served with honor and dedication.

Claude’s commitment to service extended beyond the military. He was a member of the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), an organization dedicated to supporting veterans through recreational therapy and community engagement. His involvement reflected his enduring respect for fellow servicemen and women.

Those who knew Claude will remember him as a kind-hearted and generous man whose warm presence brought comfort and joy to those around him. Always impeccably dressed, Claude had a sharp sense of style that matched his graceful demeanor—he was known for being dapper no matter the occasion.

To his beloved nieces and nephews, he was affectionately known as “Cool Uncle Junior,” a title that captured the fun-loving spirit and deep affection he shared with them. His devotion to family was unwavering, and he found great joy in spending time with loved ones. A passionate football fan, Claude cheered faithfully for the Pittsburgh Steelers, never missing a chance to support his team with enthusiasm.

Claude is survived by his brothers, Kenneth Griffith and Cornell Smitherman (Agnus); his sisters, Jo Ann Cook and Yevette Lopez; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Smitherman Sr. and Corrine Hauser-Smitherman; his brother, Gary Smitherman; his sister, Sandra Smitherman; brothers-in-law, Willie Cook and Robert Lopez; niece, Raquel Griffith; nephews, Bryant Griffith, Michael Cook and Joel Smitherman Sr.; and great-nephew, Raequawn Smitherman.

His legacy is one of kindness, love, loyalty, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A special thank you is extended to his niece, Vaneesha Smitherman, for her devoted care and friend Robert Adamson.
