The Peninsula Foster Grandparent Program sends heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs. Cleo Byrd. Grandma Byrd faithfully served as a Foster Grandparent volunteer for over 15 years, enriching the lives of many children and families. Her dedicated service will be forever cherished, and we pray that her family will be comforted in the knowledge that the seeds of love which she planted will continue to grow in the lives that she touched.

Sending my prayers and condolences to the family. Renee and Lawerence , Pearl will truly be missed . She was one of my LP Mothers and such a blessing to my family.

I just want to give my condolences to the family I’ve gotten to meet Mrs.Byrd over the last few months and she was the most loving person ever.

I want to give condolences to the Byrd family. Mr. & Mrs. Byrd were loving people who would help anyone in need. I can say Mrs. Byrd was a willing worker. I thank God for her loving spirit ❤.

Cleo's Obituary

Cleo Pearl Byrd (affectionately known as Pearl) was born February 11, 1947 in Hampton, Virginia (formerly Dixie Hospital) to the late Bernard and Gladys Cleo Garlick. She departed this life on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 78 years old.

Pearl grew up in Phoebus, Virginia and was educated in the Hampton City Schools. Throughout her life Pearl enjoyed serving and helping others. Pearl worked as a housekeeper and a school bus driver for Hampton/ Newport News City Schools.

Pearl and her late husband Robert served and were devoted members at Emmanuel Grace Baptist Church Hampton, VA. Pearl was a member of the missionary board, usher board and food committee.

During her later years, Pearl worked as a volunteer with a local Elementary School as a Foster Grandparent for several years. In 2018, News 3 honored Pearl with the People Taking Action Award for her dedication and commitment to the children in her community.

Pearl was preceded in death by her late husband Robert Byrd, brothers Bernard Garlick, Jr.,Thomas Edward Maker and sister Martha May Lindsey.

Pearl is survived by her two children, Lawrence Santiful, Jr (Donnetta) of Portsmouth, VA , Edna Renee White (Walter) of Hampton and one step-daughter England Haywood of New Kent, VA; grandchildren, Roshaun Tate (Tiffany) of Williamsburg, VA, Troy Tate of Everett, WA, Alex Santiful of Poquoson,VA, Wayne Herbert of Suffolk, VA and Lakia Santiful of Hampton, VA; 9 great-grandchildren; an Aunt, Gertrude Stewart of League City, TX; Sister in Law, Florence Garlick of Columbus, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
