Chief Master Sergeant Ronald James Walko, 71, passed away on April 25, 2025, in Wichita Falls.
A proud veteran, devoted family man, and lifelong Pittsburgh sports enthusiast, Ron left a legacy of service, dedication, and love. Ron was born on December 8, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to John Walko and Gertrude Pribish Walko. He graduated from Allerdice High School in Pittsburgh before beginning a distinguished career in the United States Air Force in 1971. Throughout his 26 years of service, Ron exemplified commitment and excellence, rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant before retiring in 1991 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
During his military career, Ron served at numerous bases including Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas; Osan Air Force Base in South Korea; Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas; Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Bolen Air Force Base in Washington D.C.; and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. His longest tenure was at Sheppard Air Force Base, where he made a significant impact as part of Civil Engineering, CDC Writer, and Instructor roles.
Ron's dedication was recognized with numerous awards and medals, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Overseas Short and Long Tour Ribbons, the National Defense Service Medal (awarded twice), the Longevity Service Award, and the Military Education Ribbon. Beyond his military accolades, he also earned certificates of appreciation for coaching Little League teams and for his contributions to the Red Cross as an outstanding blood donor.
Education was a cornerstone of Ron's life. While serving his country, he pursued higher education with vigor. He attended the Community College of the Air Force, earning two associate degrees in applied science along with certificates in aerospace management, instructional systems development, and occupational instruction. He furthered his education at Vernon Regional College with an associate's degree in multiple fields. Ron later earned a bachelor's degree in education and religion from Waylon Baptist University and completed a master's degree in education through studies at North Texas University and Midwestern State University.
After retiring from active duty, Ron continued to serve as a civil service employee for several years. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his professional life into every aspect of his personal life.
He was predeceased by his father, John Walko; mother, Gertrude Pribish Walko; brother, Theodore Walko; and John W. Walko.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife Anna Kuhns Walko; his son Micheal Walko and spouse Sarah; his daughter Michelle Dollar and spouse Chris; grandsons Cody Walko, Sean Dollar, and Jacob Dollar; sisters Janice Neimier and her husband Kenneth Neimier, and Joyce Quinn.
Family was always at the center of Ron's world. He cherished time spent with loved ones, whether playing sports with his grandchildren or sharing stories that blended humor with wisdom. Known for his storytelling prowess and quick wit as a jokester, Ron had a unique ability to bring laughter into any room he entered.
An avid gardener and exercise enthusiast, especially when it came to swimming, Ron found joy in staying active. His passion for yard work often reflected his meticulous nature. A true son of Pittsburgh at heart, Ron proudly wore clothing emblazoned with Pittsburgh sports teams' logos and could often be found with a cigar tucked into the corner of his mouth.
Friends and family will gather to honor Ron's life during a viewing on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home located at 1317 Ninth Street, Wichita Falls, Texas 76301. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the same location.
Chief Master Sergeant Ronald James Walko lived a life marked by service to his country, to his family, and to all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
