Born on December 30, 1953, to Joseph and Carrie Becvar, Dan was the youngest of four children. With a heart as wide as the open fields, he lived a life rooted in kindness, integrity, and love. Over the years, he also enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, playing softball, and bowling competitively. Dan served his country with honor and humility in the U.S. Army and North Dakota Army National Guard for 11 years with an overseas tour to Korea—an experience that shaped his deep sense of duty and quiet strength.

In 1977, Dan married the love of his life, Vickie, and together they built a beautiful life grounded in love, laughter, and deep commitment. Over their 47 years of marriage, they raised four kids, that became the center of their world—and their family only grew richer with the arrival of seven grandchildren, who became the true lights of Dan’s life.

Dan and Vickie farmed his parents’ land until late 1994. His true niche and joy was behind the wheel as a CDL driver. Over the years, Dan had various driving opportunities, one of his most memorable jobs came while building a road over the existing bridge area north of the Spirit Lake Casino, hauling and dumping loads of clay into the lake to connect the southern and northern stretches of highway—a feat he was proud to be part of.

He continued trucking where he eventually joined Gooseneck Implement, hauling large farm equipment across the tri-state area. Even after retiring, he could not quite hang up his keys—taking on part-time work with High Plains Equipment and during sugar beet harvest for Vaughn Farms, in the Cavalier area. No matter the job, Dan found joy and purpose in the work—and the road always called him back.

To Dan, there was no greater joy than being “Grandpa.” His face would light up at the sound of little footsteps, and his love for his grandchildren was as boundless as it was tender. Whether he was handing out surprise gifts “just because,” making homemade ice cream with them at Christmas, letting them ride along on the 4-wheeler or laughing over intense card games; every moment he spent with them was filled with warmth, laughter, and love. He cherished each hug, each visit, each time a tiny hand reached for his—and they cherished him right back.

He loved bonfires, lots of good coffee, and the peacefulness of birdwatching in the backyard. His Maine Coon cat was a near-constant companion, often perched nearby as Dan worked in the yard or simply sat and watched the world go by. He enjoyed the quiet rhythm of mowing the lawn and driving a truck across open roads. Dan also had a soft spot for sweets and never missed a chance to enjoy a treat, especially if he could share it with his grandkids. He was a good man, a gentle soul, and the heart of his family and will be missed beyond words.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Vickie; children, Christopher (Angelina) Becvar of Dayton, OH, Adam (Vanessa) Becvar of Fessenden, ND, Kelly (Craig) Vaughn of Cavalier, ND, and Joel Becvar of West Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren, Jordan, Addison, Lilliana Becvar, Rachel and Tate Becvar, Weston and Maggie Vaughn; sisters, Audrey Mehlhouse and Kathy Trainor; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Caroline Scheer; brother, Dennis (Ginny) Becvar; niece, Becky Brown; brothers-in-law, Marvin Mehlhouse and Karl Trainor.
