i WAS A FRIEND OFF DARIS FOR MANY YEARS AT THE PAPER MILL, DARIS WAS ONE OF THE FINEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER KNOWN. HE WAS A ROLE MODEL FOR ALL OF US AND WILL ALAWAYS BE WITH US WITH ONLY GOOD MEMORIES. DARIS WAS A GOOD ENGINEER AND WAS ALWAYS ON THE JOB. I KNOW THIS IS HARD, VERY HARD ON THE FAMILY AND I CAN ONLY OFFER CONDOLENCES. GATE CITY, VA – DARIS WAYNE HARTSOCK, AGE 84
Daris Wayne Hartsock was called home by his Lord and Savior on February 26, 2026. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family following a brief illness. Daris was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Weber City, Virginia for over 50 years. He shared his faith in Christ up until the end, even from his hospital bed to the nurses who were helping him even the staff caring for him at home.
Daris retired from the papermill in Kingsport after 33 years of work and never used even a sick day. Daris has put up his wrenches, screwdrivers and built his last street rod. He has driven his 1931 blue truck for the last time. An avid Street Rodder, he enjoyed taking old Fords, going to the junk yard and hunting parts then building a car with all the modern conveniences. He utilized his engineering skills to design and build many street rods.
His attention to detail led to Cad Drawings of his cars, all the way down to the wiring diagrams. He passed his many talents on to his kids who continue to enjoy old cars to this day.
He has restored several old cars and worked on his own as well as assisting many other folks build the car of their dreams. Daris was selfless in helping others. He was a member of the Kingsport Antique and Rod Club and traveled many miles with his street rodding family. Daris and Nell traveled to almost every state in this Great County in their little 31 Ford Truck.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bertha Nell Nickels Hartsock who was the love of his life. Two sons Lyle Wayne Hartsock and wife Tammie, Richard Shawn Hartsock and wife Audra. Four grandchildren Benjamin Wayne Hartsock and wife Alisyn Renae, Dakota Shawn Hartsock and wife Katie Scarlett, Elizabeth (Beth) Ruth Hartsock, and Montana Blake Hartsock. A sister, Teresa Hartsock Robinson and husband Wayne. Two Great Grandchildren, Lockie Elizabeth Hartsock and Hadley Ray Marie Hartsock with a 3rd expected in October. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Friday, February 27, 2026 at Gateway Baptist Church in Weber City, VA. Service will follow at 7 PM with Pastor Jeff DeBoard and Pastor Steve Collins officiating. Music will be provided by the grandson, Montana Hartsock and Luann and Eric McMurray.
Graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Holston View Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at Colonial Funeral Home by 10 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, David Castle, Jimmy Edwards and Austin Porter. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Kingsport Antique and Rod Club.
