My cousin David just called me the Thursday before he gained his wings. We were supposed to reconnect this week. I’m in disbelief. My condolences to you Ruth, our family and his friends. He was so happy when I talked with him. David showed me alot of love when I moved to Charlotte 27 years ago. He loved his family. Although we lost contact for a while, i was looking forward to reconnecting. I will miss you David, but I’m grateful for the years we shared together. May you rest in peace....

David Albert Bates, Sr., was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 23, 1956, to the late Joe Bates and Marie Ledbetter, who preceded him in death."A Time to Mourn" -David also had three sisters, Marion Bates, Barbara Woods, and Joanne Bates, and one brother, Gary Wayne Bates, who also preceded him in death.
David was raised and attended schools in South Carolina where he graduated from Airport High School. As an adult, he later moved back to Charlotte, North Carolina.
He was employed by Essex Technology Group where David decided to retire in 2022. After his retirement, he worked part-time as a stocker for Bargain Hunt stores. He enjoyed working but knew his time to step had come.
David loved his family and enjoyed attending family gatherings. He was a devoted friend, and loved listening, singing and dancing to his "Southern Soul and Blues" music. He loved football and was an enthusiastic fan of the Dallas Cowboys. At anytime the "Cowboys" were playing, one could catch him sitting in front of the TV and he only wanted to hear the words "WIN" and then the bragging rights would begin from him. His hobbies increased after retirement. He enjoyed playing cards and defeating anyone who sat down to play with him. Later in life, David began watching tennis, especially Serena and Venus Williams. He later became an avid tennis fan and enjoyed talking about tennis to all.
David leaves behind a legacy of memories cherished by his wife, Ruth R. Bates. Five sons; Richard Gaines, David Bates, Jr., Isaiah Bates all of Charlotte, North Carolina, Okeem Bates Latecca) of Wilson, NC, and Jamar William of Columbia, South Carolina, three daughters, Beulah Jackson of Columbia, South Carolina, Katara Mintz of Charlotte, NC, and Kayla Thomas (Warren), of Saint Matthews, South Carolina, sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
