As an Air Force kid I transferred into the Burkburnett school system half way through the 4th grade. David immediately welcomed me and introduced me to his friends while showing me around the school and town. I'll admit he and I slipped off to lunch at the cafe downtown more than a couple of times. It was just one of the adventures we shared as pals. He gave me a "Goodbye" hug when I left for Florida half way through sixth grade and jumped out of his SUV to give me a "Welcome back" hug in the parking lot when I next saw him again at the 2019 Class of '69 reunion. We had breakfast then he volunteered to to serve as guide around Wichita Falls for me and my little brother Saturday morning of the reunion weekend. We had renewed our friendship on Facebook in mid 2018 and communicated often, leaving each other laughing as we did in the old days. His sense of humor, respect for others and integrity is well known and just some of the great things that will remembered in tales for decades to come. David was my first best friend and served as the standard for choosing my friends for the rest of my life. He loved Marty and his family. His faith in God and dedication to being the Lord's messenger was a mission he took seriously. The respect and affection he held for his family, classmates and co-workers was a constant theme in our conversations. I never had a better friend and will miss him sincerely even though we've been 1500 miles apart for all except two days in the last 58 years. I'm sure he will be standing there when I get to Heaven, ready to show me around and introduce me to his Angel pals. It's just what he does.
Until then I will mention his name often and tell stories of our times as kids to help keep his awesome legend alive. Vaya con Dios, mi Hermano.

I will miss Uncle David's smiling face. He was so sweet to us last time we came to visit and spent a huge part of one day helping us dig through old heirlooms and photos of the family. I know he and Grandma Jewel are up there in heaven now, playing endless games of Scrabble. Or maybe Mom is playing piano at a giant Christmas party for them all. Pappaw has his Old Granddad and Tab, and Blanche Butler is there too, singing her heart out.
Kristen and Jennifer, if you read this, I am thinking of y'all and would love to hear from you. Love to my uncle Randy and all my cousins too. Tony and I made a donation to Hospice of WF in David's name.
