David was born January 6, 1941, in Leeds, ND, the son of Ernest and Genevieve Ahlberg and grew up in North Prairie, a farm community north of Leeds. He was baptized and confirmed in North Prairie Lutheran Church. David completed grades 1-8 in a rural schoolhouse a half of mile from the Ahlberg farm and then graduated from Leeds High School in 1958, after which he attended NDSU in Fargo before transferring to NDSSS in Wahpeton where he earned Diesel Mechanics and Welding certifications.
On November 25, 1961, he married Linda Lucken in North Prairie Lutheran Church. They briefly lived in Leeds before moving to Seattle, WA, where David worked at Boeing Aircraft and at a foreign care repair shop. The couple eventually returned to North Prairie to begin a farming operation that they continued until retirement in 2005. During the next several years, David maintained his interest in farming by assisting the operation run by his brother, Mark Ahlberg and nephews Carl Ahlberg, Daniel Ahlberg, Daniel Hermanson, and their families.
David was an active member of North Prairie Lutheran Church serving as president, treasurer, and in other capacities throughout his life. He had a strong interest in the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator where he was a board member for several years. He also served as a Springfield Township Supervisor where he spent much time inspecting roads, culverts, and addressing other issues that required attention.
David was a social person who could often be found having morning coffee with friends at Cenex in Leeds. He was also known for having a strong, lifelong interest in NASCAR and travelled to Alabama, Arizona, and Michigan for races. He enjoyed sports, and whenever possible, attended his grandchildren’s sporting events.
In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Todd) Vinje of Alexandria, MN, and Katherine Ahlberg (Terry Whisman) of Battle Ground, WA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, David (Lauren) Vinje; Samuel (Alycia) Vinje; John (Ellen) Vinje; Matthew Vinje; Sophia Vinje; Kylee (Bodine) Whisman Hoge, and by his eight great-grandchildren; brother Mark (Dawn) Ahlberg of Leeds, ND; sister-in-law Barbara Ahlberg of Fargo, ND; brother-in-law John Wilson of Costa Mesa, CA; sister-in-law Charlene Lucken of Northfield, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
