David's Obituary

David Monroe Hawpe

David Monroe Hawpe, age 63, of Blythe, California, passed away on July 24, 2024. He was born on January 11th, 1961 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Allen Lee Hawpe and Betty Jean Brown.

David attended Palo Verde High School and graduated in 1979. He proudly served in the Marine Corps for four years, completing two tours in Japan and achieving the rank of Corporal. David went on to work for the California Department of Corrections, serving six years at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi before transferring to Chuckawalla Valley State Prison. During this time, David served as a correctional officer, became a certified baton instructor and received the honor of employee of the month before retiring in October of 2021.

David was deeply involved in his community, dedicating countless hours to coaching various youth sports. He was also a devoted member of Blythe First Baptist Church for many years, where he served as the Commander of the AWANA program. Of all the titles held throughout his lifetime, there’s none he was more proud of than his title of Dad and Papa.

David married Ann Marie Ellis on May 25, 1984 and there would be four children from this marriage.  He married Julie Ann Crain on April 18, 2009 and there would be four children from this marriage.

David was proceeded in death by both his parents.

David is survived by his wife Julie Hawpe and his eight children; Jessica Hawpe, Blythe; Erica (Raymond) Ritchie, Joplin, MO; David (Kadie) Hawpe, Pittsburg KS; Samantha Hawpe, Blythe; Joseph Hawpe, Blythe; Savannah Hawpe, Blythe; Addison Hawpe, Blythe; Lylah Hawpe, Blythe; two brothers; Gary (Norma) Hawpe, Draper, UT; Dwayne Hawpe, Glendale, AZ; three sisters; Sharon (Kenny) Dutro, Blythe; Teresa (Steve Chestnut, Boise, ID; Deborah Hill, Blythe.  David is also survived by nine loving grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at 10 AM at Frye Chapel, with a viewing starting at 9:30 AM. Following the service, a celebration of David’s life will take place at the Blythe VFW from 11am-4pm.
