David William Lenherr was born at Marin General Hospital on October 2, 1963, and was raised in Mill Valley where he spent much of his life. After an 8-month battle with cancer David passed away peacefully in Tiburon on November 9, 2025. Donald and Carol Lenherr’s first born bundle of joy was an adorable, talented, and very funny child.
Dave was a character! He loved to laugh and made people laugh. Packed with personality, a quick wit and the gift of gab, he could talk your head off! He knew everyone, everywhere. He had a steel trap memory and loved to BS and tell stories.
Dave was passionate about baseball. He was the home run king during MV Little League at Boyle Park and once cleared the American League field, from the National League side, with the ball landing on Buena Vista Ave. That inspired one of his many nicknames, Longball Lenherr.
He played on a championship team at Redwood HS and traveled with them to play in Taiwan which was a highlight. After high school he played for American River College in Sacramento and for College of Marin until an injury derailed his further college ball pursuits at ASU. He continued to play in adult leagues with friends into his early 50s.
Dave also loved mountain biking on Mt. Tam. At the birth of mountain biking in the 1970s he built a custom bomber bike from scratch in his parents’ garage. He had encyclopedic knowledge of all things bikes and had a workshop to repair and retool them which he continued to do up until last year.
Dave was a sportsman. Some of his most cherished memories were hunting with his father, grandfather and family friends at their properties in Cloverdale and Colusa. They also shared many great memories fishing and crabbing at Lake Shasta, on the SF Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
Dave loved dogs. Shortly after he was born his parents adopted the first of many family dogs, a beagle mix named Charlie Brown. He and Charlie “shared” the same birthday for the next 15 years. In recent years Dave could be seen around Mill Valley with a pocket full of dog treats always trying to make people laugh and smile.
Dave was a foodie. He loved to talk about food and had binders full of recipes. He was fortunate to have dined at some of the finest restaurants with family, friends and clients. Recently, from his hospital bed, he phoned a local market to confirm that they’d be bringing in fresh crab from Washington state for Thanksgiving. He was also looking forward to dining at the House of Prime Rib once he was well enough to enjoy it.
Dave loved music. He began his career at the World of Sound working in sales with clients out of their Strawberry and San Francisco locations. He consulted on the design and installation of high-end home entertainment systems. Some of his clients included famous local musicians and record producers.
After nearly 10 yrs in the AV industry Dave parlayed his natural gift for connecting with people into a 20-year career in insurance. He began with National Life of Vermont in their San Francisco office. He covered all product lines but was especially partial to working with business owners on their disability policies.
For a 30th birthday trip he and his sister, Julie, met up with their parents in Munich where they were on a business trip. After touring Germany and Austria with them he and Julie took off for Italy and Greece. David wished to be buried with the St. Christopher medal he purchased at the Vatican during that trip, and more than 30 years later he was still in touch with fellow travelers with whom they had a blast scootering around Santorini. He appreciated lasting relationships and treasured many lifelong friends.
David endured intense treatment that took its toll on him, yet he still managed to entertain his care teams at UCSF and Marin Health.
David wished to give a special shout out to his sisters, Lori and Julie – his tireless advocates and caregivers for the past 8 months. David’s family would like to extend their gratitude to many friends who were there for him with phone calls, visits, cards, taking him to church, running errands for him, and watching sports with him – especially Jim O’ (Smokey), Brian, and Flach.
David is survived by his loving mother, Carol, his sisters, Lori and Julie (Scott) Edson, his niece, nephews, brother-in-law, aunts, uncle and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his father, Donald, whom he admired and missed dearly, and his adoring grandparents, Ada and Bill Lenherr.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you please consider donations in David’s memory to the Junior Giants at the Giants Community Fund or your favorite animal charity.
A Funeral mass will be held on November 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Sebastian’s Catholic Church (373 Bon Air Road, Greenbrae, California, 94904).
