Obituary for David Scott McMurtry
David Scott McMurtry, born April 3, 1963, in North Platte, NE, to Donald Vincent and Darlene Veronica (Farrell) McMurtry, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 62 of natural causes, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and countless memories that will forever make them smile.
David attended school in North Platte, graduating in 1981. A lifelong salesman, he never stood still for long. He had a gift for connecting with people, always ready with a story, a laugh, or a great deal he’d managed to find. He built and ran his own sales business, McInterests LLC, with the same energy, integrity, and dedication he brought to every part of his life. He also had a talent for giving nicknames—ones that stuck in the hearts of his family members, who will forever cherish hearing him call them by those names. He was fondly nicknamed “AWOL” by friends and family for his playful tendency to disappear on adventures and reappear with stories to tell.
When he wasn’t working or chatting with loved ones, David could often be found with a fishing pole in hand, on the hunt for the ever-elusive “Walter the Walleye.” He loved golf, the outdoors, and any chance to be on the move. His grandchildren will always remember their outings with Grandpa Mac to Chuck E. Cheese, where his playful spirit made every trip unforgettable.
David gave his heart to the Lord at a young age and was a man of strong faith throughout his life, finding comfort and guidance in his relationship with God. More than anything, he had a big heart. He never forgot the ages, grades, and milestones of his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, always making each of them feel seen and special.
David is survived by his children, Nick (Lynette) McMurtry of McKinney, TX, and daughter CharLeigh of North Platte, NE; grandchildren, Noelle, Mallory, Callum, and Declan McMurtry; sisters, Janie (Tim) Perkins of Green Valley, AZ, Joan Lerch of North Platte, and Janet (Bryce) Barbee of Potlatch, ID; and brother, Patrick McMurtry of Sun City West, AZ. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1972, his sister Judy in 2020, and his father in 2021.
A graveside service for family will be held, with a Celebration of Life on October 11, 2025, at the Moose Lodge at 5:00pm. Attendees are encouraged to be prepared to share their favorite memories of David, honoring the joy, love, and laughter he brought into their lives.
David’s love, faith, humor, and energy will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness and joy will live on in all who knew him.
