Delroy M. Chesness

Guest Book

Not sure what to say?

Grumpy old man was a font of wisdom and advice, my sincere sympathy and best wishes. God bless Del Chesness

Brett, sorry for your loss, keep the good memories close to heart and they will bring you smiles. My dad passed 20 years ago this May and I still miss him and talk to him often. They will always be missed but the memories keep them close.

So sorry for the loss of Del. He put up a grand fight but was too much to overcome. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to you and all family as two fine men passed last weekend-- the other being cousin Paul Aasen (Paul on Sat. and Del on Sunday). May they meet up in heaven to hunt and fish like little cousins once again. God rested their souls and may God Bless all who knew them.

Delroy Merton Chesness was born July 3, 1936 to George and Ann (Brudwick) Chesness, on the family’s farm outside of Hawick, MN.  He was baptized and confirmed at Nordland Lutheran Church. He began his schooling at District # 66, Irving Township country school and graduated from New London High School in 1954.

From 1954 to 1957, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Following his service time, he attended St. Cloud State for a year. In 1960, he began managing a Phillips 66 gas station in Osseo. After surviving an armed robbery, safer and long term employment was found as an equipment installer with Western Electric in 1961. During his career, WE became part of AT&T, and he retired from them in 1993. From 1994 to 1997, Midstate Telephone in New London employed him as a lineman.

A great stroke of luck came his way, in 1964, when he met Janet Corrine Anderson. Knowing good fortune when he found it, he married her on June 17, 1967 at Lebanon Lutheran Church in New London. They made their home outside New London.  Del enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his family teaching them the love of these pursuits and time in the woods. He also enjoyed playing cards and going to auction sales.

Serving community through volunteerism was always important to Del. He was a gun safety instructor for over 30 years, spent time with the Isaac Walton League, and had his strongest connection to the New London American Legion with whom he served in multiple office positions. He was awarded their “Legionnaire of the Year” award in 1996 and again in 2014.

Del died Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 79.  He is survived by his loving wife Janet; two children, Brett (Sheri) Chesness of Blaine and Julie(Neil Vera) Wedel of Willmar; four grandchildren, Brandon and Carly Wedel and Tristian and Isabelle Chesness; brother, Gaylord (Marlis) Chesness of Hawick; as well as nieces and nephews; and Pepper the dog.

Preceding him in death were his parents George and Ann Chesness. Also preceding him were many good dogs and some he loved anyways.
