Not sure what to say?

I was stunned to learn of Mr. Dalen’s death. He was Denny to most but I’ll always think of him as Mr. Dalen. And to lose both Marsha and Dennis is losing a special memory of very happy days at OU in the early 70’s. Mr. Dalen and the entire School of Theatre felt like home. I was honored to participate in the 75th Anniversary of the School of Fine Arts in which Dennis Dalen figured prominently. Those days have passed but I’ll hold on to the joy with a bit of an aching heart. Rest in Peace Mr....

Rest in peace, Denny, from the Ohio Valley Summer Theater Board of Trustees. OVST has been a local community theater production company since 1951. Denny served as Instructor of Record for OVST for many years. He was always a source of instruction and humor, helping both Ohio University students and community members in various productions. Denny's extensive professional experience helped us amateurs create better productions, and enabled OU students get both summer credit & near-professional...

R.I.P Denny. Denny hired me for OU summer theatre in 1976 and I played a role in Denny’s play HEROES. I also took his “master class” in Directing Comedy. Denny will always remain a Hero for so many. My heart aches.

Dennis and Marsha were next door neighbors with my parents for many years there on the corner of E. State and Sunnyside. More than just neighbors, though, they became good friends, a friendship that lasted after they all had moved away from that location. Dennis and Marsha were both very special people, and our world is diminished by their loss.

Penny was a great father figure, and will be missed.

My former acting teacher turned friend, who became a mentor of mine. He and his equally lovely family have always been a bright light in Athens and Beyond. Denny will certainly be missed. Hugs to all who had the honor of knowing him.

Dennis's Obituary

Dennis L. “Denny” Dalen, 88, of Athens died Friday, November 28, 2025 at his home. Born May 22, 1937 in Nelson, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Clarence and Francis Olsen Dalen.

He received his bachelor’s degree in Speech and English from St. Cloud State University and his master’s degree in Theatre from the University of Kansas. There he began his teaching career and then became part of the faculty at Ohio University in 1968.

Denny was a Professor Emeritus of Theater and Head of the Acting program at Ohio University. In 1995 he was a University Professor Award recipient and was a defining force in the Ohio University School of Theater for more than 40 years. Known simply as “Denny,” a testament to the mutual respect he fostered with students, he met learners where they were and encouraged them to take creative risks and to trust their artistic instincts.

He taught students the craft of Acting and maintained an excellent reputation as a professor. As the head of Performance, his leadership helped establish the school’s enduring culture of community. Instrumental in commemorating the college’s 75th Anniversary, he leaves a legacy as a mentor whose generosity, imagination and commitment continue to shape the experiences of students and colleagues.

Denny is survived by his two daughters, Courtney Dalen Hensley and her husband Kevin of Atlanta, GA and Lauryn Dalen of Athens; his grandchildren, Cole Hensley and Colin Hensley; a sister, Elaine Dalen Adams and her husband Mike of Florida.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marcia Dalen, who passed away February 19, 2025; and two brothers Swede Dalen and Neal Dalen.

The family has asked that memorial gifts be made in Denny's honor to The Alumni and Friends of the “The Denny Award” (an annual student scholarship).
