I grew up with Dennis in Falls Church, VA and we attended George Mason HIgh School together. He was loved and even adored by many of his classmates. One of a kind type of person. Gifted and talented. He will be missed by many.

We will miss Dennis very much. He was a friend and neighbor. We often shared stories out by our pool with him and loved listening to his music. He was a true warrior and lived life to the fullest. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Dennis Michael DeCreny, a Vietnam Army veteran and lifelong musician, born on November 15th, 1949, in Washington, D.C., to Stanley Kenneth DeCreny and Beulah Vesta Kimes, left us December 17th of 2025.
Dennis grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and later Falls Church, VA where he attended George Mason High School before getting drafted into the Vietnam War.
He served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Sergeant and serving as an Intelligence Analyst with the 101st Airborne Division. His military service had a profound and lasting influence on his life and worldview. Even in service, he carried his love of music with him, often bringing a guitar alongside his military gear.
After his military service, Dennis continued his journey at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he found his creative heartbeat in the Texas music scene, which eventually led him to being a part of the early SXSW scene in Austin. He devoted himself to music, which remained a constant source of expression, comfort, and identity throughout his life. Whether performing on stage or playing privately, music was both his craft and his refuge.
Dennis drew on the technical skills he developed through his work in music and his military experience to build a successful career in the technology sector, where he worked as a Senior Security Analyst for prominent government contractors.
Devoted to athletics throughout his life, Dennis sought challenge and exhilaration, from the basketball and tennis courts to the depths of the open ocean, where he became a certified scuba diver and instructor.
A strong character, he brought a positive atmosphere to his surroundings, and good laughter was never far away. He spread joy and friendship with folks from many walks of life, his presence a lasting light in the lives he touched.
Dennis was divorced during the last years of his life. He is survived by one stepson, a loving aunt and cousin who held a special place in his life, a brother and sister, a later girlfriend and many friends who all will miss him dearly.
Those who knew Dennis will remember him as a man marked by resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to music. He had a remarkable perseverance and sharp mind. His life reflected both the challenges and the passions of his generation, and his service and artistic spirit will not be forgotten. He leaves a big void and will be missed deeply by his loved ones.
Details regarding memorial services will be shared once a date has been finalized. Please reach out to his stepson, Sylvester B. Selster (347)654-7044, who will be organizing the service.
