Donald Ray Batts, Sr, 74, of Kiowa, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at his home.
The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bishop Funeral Service.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at the Kiowa Church of Christ with Mr. Steve Mass officiating, assisted by Rev. Kenny Morrow. Burial will follow at Kiowa Cemetery.
Donald Ray was born on September 8, 1944 in Kiowa to Lester Paul and Margie Loraine (Hobbs) Batts.
He was a fireman for most of his life beginning at the Navy Ammunition plant and later for the Kiowa Volunteer Fire Department. Donald also worked for the city of Kiowa in the water department.
Donald married Carolyn Jean Misener on March 26, 1965 in Kiowa where they made their lifelong home.
He was well known for volunteering in the community, and being a great “PaPa” to his grandchildren as well as “Batman” to many others.
The Batts’ garage was the home of many Tuesday night jam sessions. He enjoyed playing the guitar and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed traveling and sightseeing to new places.
He was a member of the Kiowa Church of Christ.
Donald is survived by his wife: Carolyn Batts of the home; children: ReGina Dugger and husband, Jerry of Kiowa, Patricia Griffin and husband, Stephen of Kiowa, Donald Batts, Jr. and wife, Debra of McAlester; grandchildren: Amber Alexander and husband, Albert of Kiowa, Matthew Johnston and wife, Shelby of Muldrow, Derek Hatridge of Kiowa, Cheyhoma Dugger of Hartshorne, Samuel Dugger of Okmulgee, Grayson Griffin of Kiowa, Peyton Edwards of Kiowa, Abby Batts of McAlester, Jenessa Dugger of Hartshorne, and Ally Batts of McAlester; great-grandchildren: Ethan and Logan Johnston of Muldrow, Austin and Avery Alexander of Kiowa; and his faithful companion: Ella.
He is also survived by his sister: Bobbie Jean Cearley of Kiowa; brothers-in-law: Roger Misener, Tom Stephens, and Raymond Misener; sister-in-law: Coleene Lewis and her husband, George; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and his buddies at the coffee shop.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Lester and Margie Batts, great-grandson: Saxon Johnston, sister: Judy Stephens, and brothers-in-law: Danny Cearley and Donnie Misener.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Donnie Ray Batts, Stephen Griffin, Jerry Dugger, Derek Hatridge, Matthew Johnston, Grayson Griffin, and Albert Alexander.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Stephens, Charles Gibbs, Randy Powell, Roger Misener, Roy Lewis, Paul Shannon, and Gayle Shannon.
