Donna Rae Nixon

Mrs. Donna Rae Nixon, 89, passed away Monday, November 10, 2025, at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Ashburn, VA.

Donna was born on April 19, 1936, to Harry Ploth and Ethel Baldwin Ploth in Carroll, IA. After graduating from Dunlap High School, Donna went on to attend and graduate from Iowa State University in 1958 with a B.S. in Textiles and Clothing. While at Iowa State, Donna met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Nixon and was married in September of 1958.

Bob and Donna moved frequently throughout Bob’s career in the Marine Corps and Donna worked at numerous clothing and craft stores before fulfilling her lifelong ambition of starting her own knitting and garment business. Donna and Bob raised three boys and eventually settled in New Bern, NC for retirement. Donna was active in the community, with local knitting and craft clubs, the church and P.E.O International. After Bob’s passing in 2012, Donna moved to Ashburn, VA to be closer to family and grandchildren.

She was a beloved mother, family member and friend known for her positive attitude and love

Donna is survived by her three boys and their spouses: Fred (Susy) of Mill Spring, NC; Rob (Kris) of Arvada, CO; Randy (Karen) of Ashburn, VA; brother Dave (Sharon) of Charleston, SC and grandchildren Jeremy, Farrah, Andrew, Ryan and Megan.

Donna is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Ethel, husband Bob and grandson Zachary.

A graveside memorial service and commitment will take place at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern, NC on December 20, 2025, at 2:00pm.
