Dorcas's Obituary

Dorcas Dixon Swain, 92, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025.  Born in Beaufort County, North Carolina to parents J. Hyman and Hattie Dixon, she had been a Hampton resident since 1963.  Dorcas was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church; she enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and beautiful flowers; and drawing and painting.  Her favorite job was as a teacher at Buckroe Baptist Day Care, a position she dearly loved.  

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Levia F. Swain; daughter, Patricia Allen; sons, Marty Swain and Michael Swain; granddaughter, Leah; sisters, Nell Roebuck, Gladys Winstead, and Shirley Elks; and brother, James Dixon; she leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Frank Swain (Sabine), Greg Swain (David Pugh), and Ben Swain; sister, Elizabeth Respess; grandchildren, Lynn, Ashley, Katye, Jesse, Angie, Tracy and Jesse; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Dan Allen; daughter-in-law, Deborah Swain; sister-in-law, Eva Jean Dixon; and many nieces and nephews.  

The family wishes to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice, with special thanks to Linsey, Michelle, Devonna, Carrie, and Cindy.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Memorial Baptist Church, 324 Newport News Avenue, Hampton by the Rev. Dr. Domeka Kelly.  The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service from 1 – 2 PM.  

A second service will be held at 12 PM on Monday, September 15, 2025, at Union Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, 2110 Old New Bern Road, Chocowinity, NC by the Rev. Joshua Farley.  The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service from 11-12 PM.  Interment will follow at the Dixon Family Cemetery, Chocowinity, NC.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, Sanctuary Restoration Fund, Hampton, VA.
