Doris was an uncommonly intelligent, kind, generous, resolute, and loving person, an unconditional tribute to her family, her community, her profession, and her volunteer work. Her exemplary character made the world notably better than it was when she came into it. Altogether unsurprisingly, Jeffrey has written a fittingly beautiful testimonial to his dear wife. We are very sorry for Doris' suffering, for her death, and for the grief of her remarkable family.

While at St. Lawrence University, I was on the riding team with Grace. We had a team tradition to host a family-style dinner the night before horse shows and the Segrave family always made the long trek up to Canton, NY to help host. After I graduated, Doris was a huge part of keeping the tradition alive. Setting up tables in the indoor ring, cooking, cleaning, purchasing gifts for the team, and even hosting smaller get togethers at the Brush Alumni House. That is how I will always remember...

Gansevoort, NY- Doris Lee Ann Segrave (née Swanberg), beloved mother, caretaker, educator, and ministry worker, died on the 22nd of August 2025 after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She passed at home in the arms of those who loved her; she was 74 years old."
Born on the 30th of May 1951, she grew up in a Swedish-American home on a pond in Stoughton, MA with her parents, Doris Helena (née Ericson) and Walter Norman Swanberg, and her siblings Phyllis and Norman Eric. In high school, her friendly nature and kind spirit made her easy friendships, and she was a cheerleader, a gymnast, and a tennis player, and she always excelled in biological sciences. She went to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she studied physical education and dance and became an accomplished gymnast – not only for herself but also in student coaching. Always a world traveler, she spent a semester studying abroad in Brighton, England, and travelled throughout Europe with her best friend Kathy Graham. After returning to UMass from the UK, she met Jeffrey Segrave, an Englishman who immediately “took a liking to a viking,” and after more than 5 years of intercontinental dating, they got married in Wellesley, MA on the 13th of August 1977.
Her love for recreational education formed the core of her working life, and after she and Jeffrey completed graduate school at Arizona State University, they moved to Saratoga Springs, NY in the fall of 1978 where Jeffrey worked at Skidmore College and she taught physical education in Burnt Hills and later founded the youth recreation program in Wilton. Even after she stopped working to raise her children and take care of both her mother and mother-in-law, she continued to remain active in building and fostering community – from running a small Creative Memories business, to being the Girl Scout leader of troops for both of her daughters. She dedicated her life to ministry, particularly as a life-long member of First Baptist Church and a champion for community members seeking support. She believed fervently that God wants us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and she carried that principle through her actions and interactions with everyone she encountered. Her happiest memories were camping on Lake George with her family and the Burrills.
She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Segrave and their children Hannah Segrave (St Louis, MO), Samuel Segrave (Saratoga Springs, NY), and Grace Segrave (New York, NY), and their partners and family, Dan DiPiero, Etta Kroner, and Quinn Baurle; and her brother Norman Swanberg and his wife Linda Swanberg and their daughters Saffronia Threatt, and Renee Gordon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her English family, including Jack and Ethel Segrave, and many of her Swedish family, including Alan Swanberg, as well as her sister.
She was a consummate caretaker, mother (nature) incarnate, who made everyone feel like they were part of her family and, in fact, everyone who knew her was.
Her funeral will be held at First Baptist Church, 45 Washington St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 on Saturday August 30, 2025 at 11:00 am, with a celebration at the family home afterwards. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations via check or cash to the Sanctuary Memorial Fund at First Baptist Church (45 Washington Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 c/o Pastor George Stefani)
