It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael “Mickey” Gomez. Michael died peacefully on November 3, 2025, at 4:35 p.m., after receiving last rites and surrounded by his loving family. He lived a long, rich, and generous life and will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Windy Gomez; his daughters, Kathleen Gomez and Kristine Gomez (Kevin Smith); and his cherished grandchildren, Diego M. Vlašić (Monica Archer Vlašić), Matteo Vlašić, and Isabella Smith. Michael’s family is proud of his many personal and civic achievements, especially his distinction as the first doctor in the family and his service as Mayor of the City of Douglas. Above all, he was a beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather.
Dr. Gomez was born in Pirtleville to Miguel and Alicia Gomez, longtime owners of the beloved Gomez Grocery Store— a gathering place for politics, community news, friendship, and support.
Michael pursued his education with dedication and curiosity. He spent three years as an undergraduate at St. Louis University in Missouri, majoring in Science and Philosophy, and earned his dental degree from St. Louis University. In 2010 he was honored by the St. Luis University Alumni with the Alumni of the year for his services to his community, given rarely. Always eager to keep learning, he later completed a semester at the University of Arizona, taking an extension course focused on business and the stock market.
While in St. Louis, Michael met the love of his life, Windy, and were married in 1956. Together they raised two daughters: Kathleen Gomez, a graduate of American University with a degree in Political Science, who now serves as Cochise County Supervisor for District 2; and Dr. Kristine Gomez, a graduate of Gonzaga University and Loyola School of Dentistry.
Dr. Gomez devoted his life to caring for others and serving his community. He was a past member of Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Knights of Columbus. He welcomed and supported foreign exchange students, taught high school students how to run a corporation, and volunteered his dental services during the earthquake in Central America during in the 1980s.
For more than fifty years, he gave tirelessly to the people of Douglas and the Pirtleville community.
He served three terms on the Douglas School Board (12 years total), was elected twice as City Councilman for Ward 4, served four years on the SEAGO Executive Committee, and was a member of the Arizona–Mexico Commission. He went on to serve as Mayor of Douglas from 2008 to 2012 and remained active with the Southwest Border Mayors Association and the League of Cities.
Outside of his professional and public service, Michael embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid pilot, loved sports and pursued them with vigor—tennis, swimming, scuba diving, biking, hunting, and skiing brought him joy, challenge, and adventure throughout his years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Douglas Rotary Club to support three of his favorite community programs:
· The Fly-In at the Douglas Municipal Airport, which he was able to attend just a few weeks ago as we flew 95 children in the air.
· The Rotary Dictionary Project, which took place on the day he passed. Members of the Douglas Rotary Club delivered dictionaries to all third-grade students in public, private, and charter schools throughout the Douglas school district.
· RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), through which two Douglas High School students attend a three-day leadership development program each year. Every participant has shared how deeply the experience impacted their perspective and their lives.
These programs meant so much to him, and your support helps continue the legacy of service he cared for so deeply.
Dr. Michael “Mickey” Gomez will be remembered for his compassion, energy, and steadfast devotion to his family and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and in the love of those who survive him.
