Duane died Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Faith Regional Health Services.

Duane was born January 12, 1934 to Harry and Anna (Kollath) Behmer, in Norfolk. He grew up an only child but was surrounded by his many Uncles, Aunts and their families, deeply rooted in music.

Duane graduated from Norfolk High School and joined the Navy shortly after. Duane played in the Navy band while stationed in San Diego, CA. After the service Duane returned to Norfolk and married LaVon Prauner on June 2, 1954. The couple raised 4 children, Brad, Mark, Tammy and Blake.

Duane was an accomplished musician that performed with the Dixie 5 Dance Band, reaching a 200 mile radius of Norfolk and continued even after the couple opened Behmer’s Music Store in 1960, which became a mainstay of downtown Norfolk. Their instruments and lessons provided an opportunity for many aspiring young musicians in the area. In 1973 Duane and LaVon built and opened the Red Bull Lounge, deemed the “entertainment capital of Nebraska” and the gateway for many early rock bands.

In 1999 Duane and LaVon were inducted into the Nebraska Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their contributions to Northeast Nebraska Bands.

Duane was the owner of Behmer’s Satellite and TV until his retirement.

Duane is survived by his 4 children, Brad and Cindy Behmer of Denver, CO, Mark and Cindy Behmer, of Norfolk, Tammy and Robert Hamik of Douglas, WY, and Blake Behmer of Norfolk, 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren
