Dwain Lee Scruggs, Sr., of Burkburnett died in his home surrounded by family on August 23, 2019 at the age of 76.
Dwain is survived by his wife, Bertha (Martin) Scruggs, daughter, Brenda Blackmon and husband Roger, son, Dwain Lee Scruggs, Jr., grandchildren, Asa Scruggs, Robert Blackmon and wife Kristen, Ryan Blackmon, Randy Blackmon, Brooklyn Blackmon, Reece Blackmon, Autumn Blackmon, and great-grandson, Roman Blackmon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Victoria Scruggs.
Dwain was born on November 7, 1942 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Valorie and R.J. He started working for his father as a heavy equipment operator at a young age, and continued in that line of work until his retirement. He married the love of his life, Bertha Scruggs, on August 19, 1966 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They moved into a house in Burkburnett, and spent the next 53 years making it their home.
Dwain was an incredibly hard worker his entire life. If he was awake, he wanted to be outside working with his hands. He liked gardening, fishing, and working in his shop whenever he could. However, he enjoyed those activities all the more if he got to do them with his family. He loved his family dearly. He traveled with them to places across the U.S. When he couldn’t drive anymore, he still enjoyed giving his grandkids rides on his electric wheelchair. He loved attending any Burkburnett sporting event in which his grandsons competed, where he could be found front and center decked out in Bulldog gear, cheering them on. The people closest to him will always remember that he wanted to take care of them, even when he couldn’t take care of himself.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 25 at the First Baptist Church in Burkburnett. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett with Rev. Robert Blackmon officiating. All are welcome to attend.
