Seeing some of the most incredible private collections of petrolania and automotive related artifacts.

Earl's Obituary

Age 90

Earl Adrain Cheese, 90, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Letitia Kaatz (Tish); and his beloved wife, Josephine Ann.

Earl is survived by his daughter, Marge Sommers; four grandchildren—Joe, Jake, Mike, and Maggie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Lemont, IL, Earl lived on his family’s property his entire life. He was known for his passion for petronolina and automobilia—collections he proudly housed and displayed. Earl was a fixture at flea markets and swap meets, where he was regarded as a celebrity in the collecting world. One of his proudest accomplishments was refinishing a 1934 Ford Coupe. Over the years, he accumulated more than 100 antique gasoline pumps and an even larger collection of porcelain signs, all meticulously displayed in his garage.

Earl began working at Reynolds Metals in McCook at the age of 19 and retired in 1989 after 37 years of service. In retirement, he continued to grow and enjoy his collection. Earl looked forward to spring to kick off his daily ritual of mowing the lawn.

He was a long-time member of the Puckerville Club and known for sharing both his vast knowledge and stories. His mind remained sharp until the very end, even as his body grew tired. He lived a long and prosperous life and will be missed.
