Edward Laurence Colby Jr. (09/22/40-03/16/21) passed away peacefully at the Peabody Home, Franklin, NH. Larry grew up in West Boxford, MA, the eldest son of E. Laurence and Marion M. Colby. He was a graduate of UNH and received both a Juris Doctor and MS in Tax from the Boston University School of Law. In 1962, Larry married his wife of 59 years, Linda Petersen of Concord, MA, and after graduation they began their "life of adventure," with Larry embarking on a career in the US Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps.During his army career, Larry served as both defense and prosecution counsel, received several postings as a military Judge and as the head of the JAG office in both Ft. McClellan, AL and Ft. Dix, NJ. He served in Viet Nam, Germany and many posts across the US, including Schofield Barracks, HI. He retired as a full Colonel at Ft. Stewart, GA, after which he was elected to the position of Solicitor General (prosecutor) of Liberty County, GA, serving for 10 years. Following that retirement, Larry and Linda moved to Savannah, GA, before returning to their New England roots and settling in New London, NH in 2014. From a young age, Larry loved to go fishing and also enjoyed playing golf in the many locations where they lived. He avidly cheered on the Patriots and Red Sox and was never found without a good book close at hand. He had a fine sense of humor that resulted in the ribbing of everyone around him, and loved a glass of good scotch and fine cuisine.Larry was preceded in death by his son, Edward (Ted) L. Colby III of Savannah, GA. He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter Mary Colby and her wife, Becky Conzett, of Oakland, CA; daughter-in-law Leah Colby-Miller, and grandchildren, Lauren and Ethan Colby of Savannah, GA; as well as his brothers Sandy (wife Jan) and Tim Colby, of Ipswich, MA, and many Colby, Chadwick and MacGregor cousins. Larry resided at the Peabody Home for the last two years, where he was loved by the staff and residents alike for his sense of humor and zest for life. He received wonderful care and support from the staff. There will be a private memorial service and internment in July in West Boxford, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in his name to the Peabody Home, Franklin, NH, or the Alzheimer's Association.
