Elizabeth Weber Obituary
Elizabeth A Weber, “Betsy”, 83 of Great Diamond Island passed away May 14, 2020. She was born in New Haven, CT to the late William P and Elizabeth Killeen Lyons on May 24, 1936.
She graduated from Hamden CT High School, received a B.A. in Math & Economics from Albertus Magnus College, and an M.A. in Education/Administration from the University of Maine.
She married William Weber in 1960 and lived in Connecticut and Massachusetts before calling Great Diamond Island, Maine home. Betsy had a love for teaching. She had a unique ability to figure out how each child learned and zeroed in on each student. She didn’t believe in the one size fits all approach. Her style of teaching truly had an impact on their lives as they would keep in touch for years later. She was always determined and taught us resilience and perseverance. We could always count on her to give the best advice and a kick in the butt when we needed it. She spoke with purpose. Her mind was sharp and her hands rarely still.
She was a parishioner and lector at the Cathedral Church in Portland. She organized Mass every Sunday during the summer months for many years on the island. She shared her love of cooking, reading, and large breed dogs. She volunteered reading to young children, serving meals at the soup kitchen, giving tours for Portland Landmarks, and driving patients for the American Cancer society to name a few. She was instrumental in forming the GDI Volunteer Fire Company as well as getting a voting station on island. She loved deeply and seized every opportunity to enjoy life. She would say her life was “pretty neat”!
She is survived by her husband William E Weber (Ted); sons, William Jr. (wife Lorna), and John T ; daughter, Elizabeth; grandson, John T Jr ( and Amanda); granddaughters Ashley (husband Nick) and Shelby (fiancé Tom); great grandchildren, Timothy and Chance; and her 150 lb. Saint Bernard, Suzie. She was predeceased by her sons, Carl F. A. and Thomas Weber.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at a later date. Interment will be private.

I am very sad to learn of Besty's passing. She, Ted and Beth were so welcoming and helpful to me during my career in the Portland Fire Department and I loved spending time with them on GDI. I have missed them all since my retirement and will always have a special place in my heart for them. Betsy was amazing, witty and insightful.

I have a book entitled "Healing after Loss" and on the date of May 24th when Betsy was born it states " in the midst of absence, a presence is made known". She was always a very welcomed, strong and resilient presence but I believe that in her absence we will realize even more the full measure of her presence. Betsy is a lady that lived life to the fullest. She was an amazing wife and mother to her entire family. God blessed her with countless talents and she shared those gifts with the many people she met along the way. She lived her Christian faith by an example of caring for others. I am sure her soul and spirit are with our Heavenly Father. What an amazing life journey and an example of caring for her fellow man.

Our first trip to the States and one of the first persons we met was Betsy, along with Ted and Beth. How lucky were we? No one could have been luckier! We had only met the brash American tourist before but after meeting Betsy we were in love with Americans and America. The Webers showed us such generosity, kindness and love that we went back several times over the past 18 years. We are so saddened by the loss of one of God's great lady's and we are so much better persons for having known her. She was most definitely one in a million. Ill never forget the early January day that Scott M and I decided to camp out overnight in the woods on the cliff side and woke up with an inch of snow on us.
We went straight to Webers cottage (5:30am) and Betsy made us coffee and eggs. She will always be with us.❤

Betsy was such an independent, determined person. I will never forget how she would navigate herself up or down the boat ramp all by herself and how everyone who observed her on those occasions knew not to help her because she had made it very clear she didnt want help when they had tried before.
