To Beverly, Everly, Wayne and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Although I never met your aunt in person, I feel like I’ve known her for quite some time. Beverly and Everly, I remember how fondly you use to speak of your Aunt Yvonne back when we were in school together, and I knew them how much she meant to you both. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, as you face this most significant and difficult loss.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

Emily's Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Emily Yvonne Bates Waters, aged 83, of Waters Avenue, Suffolk, Virginia, who transitioned from this life on Monday, December 29, 2025 at her residence, surrounded by the love of her family.  Born to the late Willie Mae Bates, Emily “Bonnie” embrace life with an unwavering spirit and a deep commitment to her family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert Bates Sr., her sister, Martha J. Bates and her niece, Nancy J. Hunter.

Emily was a devoted mother whose love knew no bounds. She cherished her husband, son, granddaughter and extended family, which included her nieces and nephews, her great-nieces and nephews, her great-great nieces and her great-great-great nieces and nephew…FIVE generations of love. Her legacy of loving, kindness and giving it to you straight will be carried on by those who had the privilege to know her.

She leaves behind to treasure her memories, her husband of 62 years, Henry L. Waters, her son, Jason Waters, and her granddaughter, Abriana Johnson-Waters. 

Emily, also affectionately known as Auntie Em, will forever live in the hearts and minds of her extended family. 

A special thanks to the caring staff of Trinity Hospice for their loving care and support during this difficult time.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home and the compassionate individuals who provided support during this time, including Abriana Johnson-Waters, Brittany Watkins and Quanisha Bates.
