With deep love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Erma Morgan, who quietly went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the blessed age of ninety.
Born on May 4, 1935, to the late Nathaniel and Bernice Sanderlin, Erma was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Aaron Morgan. A woman ahead of her time, she made history as the first female barber to work and cut hair in a barbershop on Church Street in Norfolk. She was also an outstanding athlete, but basketball always held her heart.
Erma graduated from high school and later dedicated her career to serving others. She worked in the cafeteria at Butts Elementary School in Chesapeake, where her warmth and kindness touched the lives of students and staff. She also worked at the military commissary, where her strong work ethic and joyful spirit were admired. Outside of work, Erma expressed her creativity through pottery, one of her many passions.
Faith was the foundation of Erma’s life. As a devoted member of New Weeping Mary Missionary Baptist Church, she served faithfully as a good and dedicated servant of the Lord.
Erma leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Margaret Hodnett, and her son, Mark Morgan. She was the proud grandmother of Amos Hodnett Jr. and his wife Krystal, and Brandon Morgan, and the doting great-grandmother of Jaden, Jada, Draya, and Kaden Hodnett. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Sanderlin and his wife Mary, as well as two children of the heart, Don and Bridgett Wakefield. In addition, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends who will forever treasure her love and kindness.
Though her earthly journey has ended, Erma’s light will continue to shine through the lives of those she touched, and her legacy of strength, service, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7
