Ernest West, Jr. Obituary

Ernest Stanley West, Jr.

1961 – 2025

Ernie West passed away on October 19, 2025, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee after suffering a stroke.

His life began in Concord, New Hampshire with his parents Ernest and Dorothy (Wolfenden) West. In his youth, he lived in many cities and states, but always considered Ringwood, New Jersey his hometown.

He lived for his family and worked hard to provide. Over his life he did many things including roofing, managing fast food restaurants and bookstores, shoveling snow, doing janitorial work, setting and cleaning cemetery monuments and markers through his business Granite State Cemetery Services, managing a garden cemetery and crematorium in Texas, and being a stay-at-home-dad.

He was a man of deep faith, raised a Baptist and converted to Catholicism as a young man. Over the years he deepened his faith through study, writing, and prayer. He actively worked to bring folks closer to God and into the Catholic faith.

He was friendly and kind. He loved to laugh and joke. He never held a grudge and encouraged forgiveness, understanding, and hope.

Ernie loved his hobbies and had many interests. He was passionate about reading and learning, particularly history and theology. He was an avid book, stamp and coin collector; these hobbies provide additional avenues of historical exploration and learning. He had a beautiful singing voice, and he played the guitar. He was a lifelong Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

He was happiest spending time with his family. He loved playing games, watching movies, and talking and engaging with those he loved. Everyone had their own special relationship with him.

Ernie was predeceased by his father, Ernest West, Sr.

Left to continue to love and remember him are his wife, Susan; his seven children Megen, Bridget, Connal (and wife Emily), Aidan, Benjamin, Samuel, and Ernest; his two grandchildren, Mia and Marco; his mother Dorothy, his sister Wendy, his brother Timothy, nieces Luna and Nova; and many cousins and friends.

He will continue to be much loved and missed, and his memory will always remain a blessing.

The family is grateful to Father John Trough for driving from Alabama to administer the final sacraments.

Additionally, we would like to thank Ascension St Thomas Rutherford nurses, doctors, specialists, clergy, and staff who cared for him during his final days. A special thank you to Dr. Steuart, and nurses Kelly and Addy for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during a difficult time.

Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH on Monday, October 27, 2025 from 9:00-10:30 A.M.  A graveside service will follow at 11:00 A.M. in Riverdale Cemetery, Danbury, NH.

May the memories of Ernie’s well-lived life bring you solace in the wake of this incredible loss. I knew Ernie as “Megen’s Dad” and could always count on him to spark a scholarly debate in the time it took him to drop us off at the mall, somehow managing to eviscerate my argument with a gleam in his eye. He was a true Renaissance man and gifted us with the fruits of his many talents.

I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathies and condolences to Dorothy, Wendy, Tim, Susan and all the kids. I remember many a walk and talk with Ernie, Wendy, and the Madison sisters to and from school. Such fun times! He was loved and will be deeply missed. My love to the family as they mourn him.

From the time we met, it seemed like we had a special relationship. I loved visiting with Ernie, and our discussions usually centered on God, the Bible, and the church. Otherwise, our families were a common topic. It was very clear from the beginning of our relationship that his family was a top priority for him. I grew quickly to love Ernie. I'm personally sad for his departure but I have complete confidence that he is with our Lord. May God be with and bless his family as you deal with your loss. I will miss him too.

Ernie was very bright, extremely well read in Literature, an avid collector of rare and special books, full of energy and humor. Our families were friends in New Hampshire (1988-1994) right when we were both starting to have children - we attended many book studies together in our homes on classic Catholic authors, went to many family picnics in beautiful NH parks, spent many hours discussing Catholic theology, Chesterton, Tolkien, etc. Ernie was the founding Editor, inspiration and driving force behind The Farrago - a Catholic family newsletter that he and I started in our homes in Nashua and Manchester, NH back in 1993. Typed at home in MS Word on my PC - we distributed it to our circle of Catholic family friends (home-schoolers, book study couples, etc.) We started mailing it to 20 families - and over the 2 years of its existence it grew to reach over 200 families across New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Ernie's wit, humor and knowledge of the great British Catholic writers was evident in every issue. May he find eternal rest in the Lord, attain salvation, and get to meet his beloved authors, Catholic Saints and heroes over very long conversations and good cheer. Ernie gave me several of his treasured Hilaire Belloc books - and I encourage everyone to read The Four Men (a Farrago) by Belloc in his honor. My prayers and condolences to his family and all his wonderful children and his first wife Laura.

Ernie was kind and full of laughter. He repaired my lawnmower for me. We had many short conversations in the parking lot in Murfreesboro.
