Ethelwyn Jeanne Wornom, 93, passed quietly away at Mary Immaculate Hospital on Dec 23, 2022, after a long illness. She was born on August 9, 1929, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, to the late Ismael Fredrick and Grace Slider. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold Wornom, and her brothers Leroy Fredrick and Roger Fredrick.
Known as “Freddie” to many of her friends, Ethelwyn is survived by her sons David and James; her nine grandchildren, Valerie, Christina, Elizabeth, Elena, Benjamin, Laura, Adelaine, Gabriel, and Levin; her brother Dr. Laurence Fredrick; and her sister Roberta Riegel.
Ethelwyn graduated from Ellis School for Girls in 1946 in Newtown Square, PA. In 1950, she graduated with a degree in sacred music from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and later earned her Masters in Education from William and Mary. An accomplished pianist and musician, she served as choir director and organist at Hampton Baptist Church and several other congregations in Hampton Roads over the course of her long life. She was a music teacher in York County for 15 years; she also tutored numerous children and young adults in piano and voice.
Known for her smile and ready laugh, Ethelwyn enjoyed attending church, volunteering at Mary Immaculate, and reading her Bible. She was especially fond of Psalm 23. She was also a voracious book reader on many subjects and themes; she wrote poetry; and she always knew what was happening locally. She loved life and enjoyed atypical adventures like visiting Bulgaria and camping on Kerr Dam.
Ethelwyn was energized by being with people as often as possible! Her hospitality was expansive and enjoyed by many. Everyone remembers her Thanksgiving meals and her Christmas cookies and decorations as being in a class all their own. She will certainly be missed. The family appreciates her many caring friends and companions over the years.
A celebration of her life will be held this spring.
