Thurston Eugene's Obituary

Thurston Eugene Cloud Jr.October 15, 1937 – August 28, 2025

Thurston Eugene “Gene” Cloud Jr., of Bristow, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born October 15, 1937, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to Thurston Eugene Cloud Sr. and Velma Delores Stone Cloud.

On October 6, 1957, Gene married the love of his life, Rebecca Jane Saul, in the home of Rebecca’s Aunt Ella. Their loving union brought forth two children: daughter Daphne Dawn Applegate Carrier and son Darren Eugene Cloud.

Gene was raised and educated in western Oklahoma later moving to Meeker, Oklahoma where he graduated from high school. His career in sales allowed his family to live in both Oklahoma and Houston, Texas, before ultimately settling in Olive, Oklahoma in 1973, where they have made their home for the past 47 years.

A man of the land, Gene raised cattle, baled hay, and enjoyed working on his tractor and equipment. He was especially proud of his bird dogs, Butch and Duke, and was an avid quail and pheasant hunter. Gene had a gift for connection—he treasured family gatherings and was known for keeping in touch with extended family through frequent phone calls.

Gene was a devoted supporter of Oklahoma Sooners sports and enthusiastically encouraged his children and grandchildren in all of their activities. He was a longtime member of Olive First Baptist Church and was on the Olive Public School Board of Education for five years. He was saved at the age of 13 while riding horseback on a ridge in Carter, Oklahoma—a moment that shaped his lifelong faith.

Gene was a natural teacher. Long car rides became lessons in math and spelling games, and he had an exceptional mind for numbers.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Rebecca Jane Cloud, parents, Thurston Eugene Cloud Sr., Velma Delores Stone Cloud, and Melvin Cook; son-in-law James Applegate; and siblings Delores, Billie Deana, Odell, Gola-Faye, Raymond, Linda, Mel, and Bobby.

He is survived by daughter Daphne Applegate Carrier and her husband Norris of Olive; son Darren Eugene Cloud and his wife Debra, also of Olive. Gene leaves behind a legacy through his grandchildren: Jarred Applegate, Garrett Cloud and his wife Candace, Makaela Bagwell and her husband Hayden, and Braden Cloud and his wife Paige; and 11 cherished great-grandchildren: Braiton, Gavin, Eastyn, and Wyatt Applegate; Silas and Summer Bagwell; Abbi, Rylie, and Jordyn Cloud; and Grayson and Brantley Cloud.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd at 1:00 PM at Olive First Baptist Church, 9372 S 433rd West Ave, Drumright, OK.

Arrangements are under the direction of Traditions Funeral and Cremation Services, 35 S Main, Kellyville, OK. Phone: 918-247-7373.
