Frank M. Steadman, Jr. of Summit, NJ passed away on May 9, 2018 at the age of 86.
Private funeral arrangements are under the direction of Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave, Summit, NJ. A Memorial Service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Summit at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday May 19, 2018.
Frank was born in Newark, NJ on October 26, 1931. He graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. degree in Political Science in 1953, received his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1956, and passed the bar exam on his first attempt. After graduating from law school, Frank was commissioned as Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in the Judge Advocate General’s office until he was honorably discharged in December, 1959. He had a plum station assignment in San Francisco, where he met Patricia Sullinger in the singles group at their church.
Frank and Pat were married on February 20, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan. The newlyweds moved to Maryland where Frank began his career as an attorney for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company. He and Pat had two daughters, then relocated to Virginia where their third daughter was born. In 1977, the family moved to Summit, NJ. After a 27-year career in the legal organization of AT&T and its subsidiaries, Frank retired in 1987.
Frank’s faith was very important to him, and he was active in the church throughout his life. His most recent church home was Central Presbyterian Church, where he served in a number of roles. In addition to his work with the church, Frank was an active member of several community organizations including the Old Guard of Summit, the Summit Historical Society, and the Red Cross.
Despite Frank’s serious commitments to his legal career, church, and volunteer work, he also had a fun-loving and easy-going side. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed many games and sports, including tennis, basketball, football, backgammon, and chess. His daughters remember hours of fun boogie boarding with their dad on family vacations at Bethany Beach, DE. He also enjoyed reading (he was a lifelong student of history and theology), gardening, British TV, music, and good bread and wine with dinner.
After retiring, Frank discovered a love for travel. He and Pat took a number of wonderful trips to Europe, and enjoyed family vacations to Cape Cod, MA and Bethany Beach. During the last few years, he expanded his culinary repertoire and took pleasure in cooking great meals for his family. He was also a member of the Towler Lunch Club, ROMEOS (Retired Old Men Eating Out) dinner group, and the Prime Time Prayers Bible Study at the Presbyterian Church at New Providence, and valued the friendships he developed with the other members of those groups.
Frank is lovingly remembered as a humble servant who put others before himself and found peace in the profound grace and love that he believed God has for all of us. He was a true gentleman whose greatest love was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Patricia, and his loving daughters: Sarah Steadman of Madison, NJ; Pamela Steadman of Portland, OR; and Jennifer Steadman of Livingston, NJ. He was our rock - a very faithful and loving husband and dad - and we miss him terribly.
Those who wish may make donation in Frank's memory to Summit Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 234, Summit, NJ 07902-0234 or http://www.summitems.org.
