Fred (or Dad as we all lovingly called him) was my niece Millie’s grandpa. But he was so much more than that to my family. His daughter Crystal became like a sister to me. My kids Gabriel and Sydney grew up with Freddy and Celeste. He and Sylvia were always so kind and welcoming. Fred always greeted us with a smile and a hug. I always hoped I’d catch him on a rib making day whenever I picked my niece up from their house. Because I knew the “pasa le Mima are you hungry” invitation would...

The Story of My Brother, Fred

My brother Fred was the kind of person who cared deeply, loved fully, and helped everyone he came across. That’s just who he was—naturally selfless, naturally giving.

We grew up extremely poor with our single mother, who raised four boys on her own. No sisters—just four boys learning life together. We slept on the floor and carried our clothes from place to place in trash bags, doing whatever we had to do to make ends meet. Even in those...

Fred's Obituary

Fred Martinez, born February 18, 1967, in San Antonio, Texas, was called home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2026, at the age of 58.

Fred was the definition of a family man—a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and steady presence to all who knew him. He lived his life rooted in strong faith, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his family. A hardworking provider and protector, Fred led by example, instilling confidence, wisdom, and values that will live on through his children and grandchildren.

To his family, Fred was more than a father — he was a safe space, a guide, a compass, and a hero. He gave unconditional love, steady guidance, and was always there in times of need, no matter what. His strength was quiet but constant, his kindness genuine, and his compassion deep. He was selfless, caring, supportive, and strong in both spirit and heart.

Fred’s love extended far beyond his family. He was there for anyone he crossed paths with, offering help, kindness, and understanding.

Known for his humor and warm smile, Fred was a natural jokester who could lighten any room. He was also famously the family’s “BBQ king,” bringing everyone together through food, laughter, and love. Above all, he was a proud husband, dad and grandfather whose greatest joy was his family.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Martinez; his mother, Maria Teresa Martinez; his daughters, Crystal Marie Martinez and partner Jaime Contreras, Tiffany May Martinez, Celeste Leann Martinez and partner Eddy Bautista; his son, Fred Martinez Jr. and wife Sarah Lynn Martinez; his brothers, Larry Martinez, Toribio Martinez, Danny Martinez, and cousin George Adame; his grandchildren, Gavin Matthew Martinez, Camille Jaelyn Lozano, Madison Ella Martinez, Isaiah Contreras, Isaiah Kyle Martinez, Caylee Nicole Contreras, Elaina Marie Martinez, and Noah Allen Martinez; along with extended family and countless friends who were blessed to know him.

Fred’s presence, love, and guidance will be dearly missed, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he loved so deeply.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service at Hillcrest Funeral Home.

Procession will depart Hillcrest on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 9:15 AM for a 10:00 AM graveside service at Mission Burial Park South.
