Anchorage resident, Garrett Cecil Gaines Sr., 74 passed away peacefully, Wednesday June 26, 2013 at home with family at his side. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Change Point Church, 6689 Changepoint Drive. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the services. Garrett will be laid to rest with his family 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013 with Military Honors at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.Garrett Cecil Gaines Sr. was born on November 9th, 1938 to William Russell Gaines and Willie Pearl (Burrel) in Paris, Kentucky. At the age of 19, he enlisted as active duty with the Navy on U.S.S Boyd. Garrett was awarded the Good Conduct Medal during his service. After serving in active duty, he was honorably discharged and transferred to Navy Reserve in San Diego, California. In 1964, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska. At this time he began employment in the hotel industry at the Anchorage Westward Hotel, which later became Anchorage Hilton Hotel. He received multiple Employee of the Month and Year Awards and happily retired after working there for 44 years. Garrett loved being outdoors, fishing, hunting and being with his family and friends. He considered anyone a friend after spending just minutes with them. Garrett had a good deal of friends, many of whom were from all over the world. He often spoke of living a simple life and not worrying about the small stuff. He cared very much about his family and was always there for support. Garrett was a loving and caring companion, father, grandfather and a friend. Garrett touched many lives and will be greatly missed by many. Garrett was preceded in death by his daughter, Vivian Price; and son, Thomas Hadnot. He is survived by his longtime companion, Hartense Hadnot; sons, Garrett Gaines Jr. and William Gaines, their significant others Ksenia Gaines and Summer Yancey; grandchildren Alaiah, Aria and Isaiah Gaines, Alyna and Dalya Deishl, Montel Massenburg, Ettienne Belisle, Tr@gan Yancey; daughters, Paulette Hadnot , Tina Briley and her husband Roy Briley; grandchildren, Aspen and Autumn Rainey, Maddison and Payton Briley; numerous other relatives in Ohio and Kentucky.
