Gary A. Mankowski, 74, Sturgeon Lake, formerly of Wrenshall, died suddenly on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at his home. He was born on July 4, 1951 in Eveleth to David and Lois Mankowski. Gary attended Eveleth High School graduating in 1969. He worked for Prudential Life Insurance Company and that is where he met his wife, Cindy. On June 21, 1975, Gary married Cindy Davis in Carlton. They lived in Wrenshall and Gary worked for New England Life Insurance Company in Cloquet. He later worked for Halvor Lines as an OTR driver. Gary also operated Countryside Auto in Wrenshall through the years. In 2015, Gary retired from his last endeavor of working for Patterson Dental as a dental technician and repairing dental equipment in Twin Ports and Wisconsin areas. In 2017, Gary and Cindy moved to Sturgeon Lake. He enjoyed pickleball, cribbage, and playing scrabble. Watching Jeopardy was a treasured time for Gary which meant no phone calls or interruptions! Gary liked working on cars and will be remembered for building his Shelby Cobra kit car.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents: David and Lois Mankowski; and his in-laws: Earl and Doris Davis
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Cindy; two daughters: Alexa (Brian) Gordon and Bethany (Ryan) McKeon; five grandchildren: Brady, Logan, and Trent Gordon and Evan and Harper McKeon; three siblings: Cindi Mankowski, Charles (Donna) Mankowski, and Candace Mankowski; sister-in-law: Sherry (Greg) Reed; uncle: Florian Mankowski; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025 from 4-6 pm in Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlton. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025 at 11 am in Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlton. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends one hour prior to the service at the church. FRAGRANCE FREE AND FLOWER FREE service due to severe allergies within the family. Please limit fragrances, flowers, and candles to accommodate the family. Instead of flowers, we suggest silk arrangements, plaques, wind chimes, or battery lighted lanterns.
