Gaylan was born in Litchfield, MN to Russell and Ruth Johnson. He grew up on a farm outside Atwater, MN and graduated from high school there in 1970. He joined the United States Army and served for three years. He served as an X-ray technician at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium. Upon his discharge, he returned to the U.S. and worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge, AR. He married Martha Stovall in 1974 and graduated from Arkansas State University in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. While at Arkansas State, he was a part of the Army ROTC and took a commission as an officer in the Army upon graduation. He took his family to Ft. Bliss (El Paso), Regensburg, Germany, and back to Ft. Bliss before leaving them stateside while he returned to Hanau, Germany until 1989. After his discharge, he moved to Zion, IL where he worked in public affairs at Ft. Sheridan as a civilian and then at the MEPCOM at Great Lakes Naval Station.Gaylan was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Ruth Johnson of Willmar, MN. He is survived by his children Matthew (Heather) of Tulsa, OK and Emily of Denver, CO, his only granddaughter, Elizabeth of Nashville, TN, his brother Gale Johnson of Willmar, MN, and his girlfriend Kathy Bleich of Mundelein, IL. There will be no funeral services. His ashes will be interred next to his parents in Atwater, MN at a later date
