Geoffrey Stephen's Obituary

Geoffrey Stephen “Steve” Smith, age 79, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born on October 19, 1946, in Florala, Alabama, the son of Russell and Gertha Smith. From an early age, he embodied the values of duty, integrity, and humility—qualities that would define his life and legacy.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States Army, rising to the distinguished rank of Command Sergeant Major. His military career was marked by honor, leadership, and unwavering dedication to those he served alongside. He was a decorated veteran, having received numerous medals, citations, and campaign ribbons, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal, among others. Steve is to be honored not only for his active-duty service, but also for a lifetime of commitment and sacrifice that continued long after his retirement.

Beyond his service, Steve was known for his strong character, genuine kindness, and quiet humility. He carried himself with grace and respect for others, never seeking recognition, yet deserving of it in every way. His warm sense of humor brought joy to family and friends alike, and his presence was a steady, reassuring force to those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life Service honoring the life of Godfrey Stephen Smith will be announced by Evans Funeral Home.
