George's Obituaries

George Burton Cooley, Jr. of 1099 Beaver Dam Road, Hillsville, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

George was born in Hillsville on May 12, 1953 to the late George Burton Cooley, Sr. and Lillie Pearl Wilson Cooley.

After graduating from Radford University in 1976, George worked as a DJ and a journalist in Mebane, North Carolina. He returned to Virginia in 1980 to attend University of Richmond’s TC Williams School of Law. Following graduation from TC Williams, George returned to Hillsville in 1982 to practice law, marry and raise his family. As an attorney, George dedicated his practice to juvenile and domestic cases, pursuing his passion to help build a brighter future for the children and families of Carroll County.

From the time his young sons, George III and Eric, were 6 and 3 years old, George was a devoted supporter of youth sports in Carroll County. Over the next two decades, he coached T-Ball, Dixie League Baseball and Rec. League Basketball. George was perhaps most proud of helping to grow a robust co-ed youth soccer program in Carroll County and of his dedicated service as the coach to the Girl’s Varsity Soccer Team at Carroll County High School.

George is survived by his wife, Sara Smith of Hillsville; son, George B. Cooley III and wife, Lauren; son, Eric A. Cooley and wife, Michelle; and (the apple of his eye), grandson Tristan A. Cooley in addition to his aunts, Loretta and Becky Wilson and numerous, and well-loved, cousins and friends.

A wake to celebrate George’s full and generous life will be held at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 28, 2016, from 4pm – 6pm. Friends and family members who have thoughts and remembrances to share will be welcome to do so at 5pm.

There will be a private service at a later time for the immediate family. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Carroll County Parks and Recreation fund. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
