Three times in all his name is called: GEORGE DANIEL SEKERAK, but he is not answering his final roll call. So, on this day, August 23, 2024, we say goodbye. Lo, there in Valhalla does he see his wife, Barbara Ann Nagy Sekerak, his father, George Sekerak, Sr., his mother, Martha Therese Orincak Sekerak, his aunt, Anna Orincak, and God in a place of love, joy and harmony. Loving father of Brian Sekerak and dear brother of Marilyn Conrad (the late Bill) of SC and Charles Sekerak (Joan) of IL.
George attended Benedictine High School where he lettered in baseball. He declined a minor league baseball offer in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. He was employed at Republic Steel as a laborer, Second Helper, Open Hearth, overhead crane operator, and Industrial Engineer of time and motion studies.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army (Sgt. E-5) in the Big Red One, U.S. 7th Army Europe, Germany, 2nd Germy Army Corp. "Think Like A Wolf." He was an American Legion member and had awards from Thompson Drag Raceway (Modified Sports Class, Corvette).
George retired as a police officer for the Cleveland Police Department where he began his career in law enforcement on basic patrol in Division Six. He was an expert marksman. He had also been a responder to the Hough Riots in July of 1966. He was later assigned to the Accident Investigation Unit where he was identified and recognized for bravery on July 23, 1968 during the night of the "Glenville Shootout." While under heavy weapons fire, he successfully dragged his critically wounded partner to safety while applying a lifesaving tourniquet. George was eventually promoted to Sergeant and his assignments included: Accident Investigation, Hit Skip Unit., Budget Unit, Detective Bureau District 2, Internal Affairs, IRS Public Corruption Task Force, OIC Federal Drug Task Force, OIC Higbee Company, Security.
He was an undergraduate student teacher of Criminal Justice Studies at Kent State University. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Quantico, VA), Class 123, and earned credits at Virginia University.
George's law enforcement career continued after retirement from the CPD and included Director, US Federal Protective Services, Ohio District, T.D.Y., chief of Operations, Federal Protective Services, Chicago, Chief of Investigations, Ohio BMV, Chief Inspector, Protective Services, Executive Protection, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, International Security Associations, Dublin, Ohio, Consulting, Special Event and Investigative Operations.
He was an avid hunter, fly fisherman, and primitive camper at Glacier National Park (Montana).
