One of America's finest from the greatest generation. A Purple Heart recipient. He fought through some of the most notable battles of WW 2 in the South Pacific. Wasn't aware of this fact until I read his obituary. Yet I cannot recall ever seeing him without a smile on his face. An American hero during and after the war.

George Desilets
Dover - George Henri Desilets was born on October 18, 1917, in St. Helene, Province of Quebec, Canada. One of eight children, he was the son of Freddy and Aurora (Lavigne) Desilets. At the age of five, he moved with his family to Sanford, Maine, where he lived until he was called into service in March of 1941. He served in the army infantry, and was deployed to the Pacific theatre in October of 1942. He fought on the front lines in New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Phillipines. While serving his country, George earned a purple heart, a good conduct medal, and a bronze star for heroic achievement in connection with military operations. George was discharged in 1945.
Upon his return home, George met Lucille Moore of Somersworth, NH on a blind date; they were engaged three weeks later, and married 3 months later. George and Lucille settled in Somersworth and had 6 children together: Delores (Normand Labrecque), Dianne (Paul Roy), Daniel, Denise (Jack Pieratt), Donald (and Madeline), and Donna (James Desharnais.)
George spent the better part of his career in the grocery industry. He was the General Manager of Ray’s Enterprises, which encompassed Rays Supermarket in Somersworth, Siegel’s City in Dover, and Lee’s Supermarket in Lee. George was a well known fixture in all 3 locations, and remained in this career until 1968. Deciding he needed a change of pace, George spent the next 10 years at GE, retiring in 1978 as a set-up man.
After retirement, George and Lucille spent several years between their two homes in Somersworth and Zephyr Hills, Florida, eventually settling at Langdon Place in Dover, NH. George spent a lifetime raising his family and providing a needed service to the community. He loved to garden and to visit his beloved White Mountains and the Green Mountains of Vermont. He derived great peace from the beauty of nature. George is pre-deceased by his siblings Isabelle, Cecile, Estelle, Georgette, Gerard, Paul and his daughter Denise. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, his 5 remaining children, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday March 27, 2018 at 11AM at St. Martins Church, 120 Maple St. Somersworth, NH. Family and friends may visit prior to the mass between 9:45 & 10:45AM at St. Martins Church.
