Rustburg……...George “Melvin” Mays, Jr., age 53 of Rustburg died Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born July 24, 1970 in Lynchburg, he was a son of Marion Lichford Mays of Rustburg and the late George “Red” Melvin Mays, Sr. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Claude and Addie Mays; maternal grandparents, John and Ellen Lichford; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Bailess. Melvin was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, as well as on the Cemetery Committee and the Worship Display Committee. He was an employee of UPS for over 27 years. Melvin loved antique cars, trucks, tractors, tractor shows, the Atlanta Braves, and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved traveling especially to the beach and Pigeon Forge, TN.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Penny Shelton Mays of the residence; one son, Daniel Mays of the residence; one brother, John Norman Mays and wife, Sandy of Rustburg; his mother-in-law, Gladys Shelton of Gretna; a brother-in-law, Edd Shelton and fiancée Pam Patterson of Hurt; two nieces, Erin Mays of Blacksburg, and Emily Mays of Rustburg; two aunts, Adell Adams of Hurt, and Christine Mays of Gretna; two great uncles, Ralph Hamilton of Rustburg, and Earl Hamilton of Buena Vista; one great aunt, Barbara Hamilton of Lynchburg; his sister-in-law’s husband, Johnny Bailess of Hurt; and special friends, Gary and Becky Booth of Rustburg, and L.C. and Linda Booth of Concord.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Monday September 4, 2023 at New Chapel Baptist Church by Reverend Tim Dooley, and Reverend Roger Roller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2023 at New Chapel Baptist Church and other times will be at the residence.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. James Warner, Dr. Kenneth Saum, the Lynchburg General ER, CTICU, and Cardiac Cath Lab staff and physicians for their phenomenal care.
