George's Obituary

George Thomas Roach, Jr., 74, of 409 Lake Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, June 26, 2014 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City. Mr. Roach was born in Perquimans County on February 22, 1940, and was the son of the late George Thomas, Sr. and Alice Simpson Roach. A life-long farmer, he had retired from Estes Express Lines, was a member of both Cedar Grove United Methodist Church and Parkville Ruritan Club, and was a charter member of Winfall Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of nearly 51 years, Mary Sue Sawyer Roach; a daughter, Monica Thornton and husband Carl "Froggy"; a son, Thomas Roach and wife Melva, all of Hertford; and five grandchildren, Michael Castelloe, Kelley Jennings and husband Will, and Kari, Cody, and Myra Roach. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery by the Revs. Michael Williams and James Spaugh. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to either Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, PO Box 13, or the Winfall Volunteer Fire Department Association, PO Box 25, both in Winfall, NC 27985, or to the American Cancer Society, Greenville Office, 930 Wellness Drive #B, Greenville, NC 27834, (www.cancer.org).
