Not sure what to say?

In memory of and in gratitude for your honorable military service. May God bless you and welcome you home

He was a wonderful Opa! Many times I would see him at Preston’s games and even on trips for the baseball team. He will be missed by his family and church family.

Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

George's Obituary

George Wittman, 90, of Denton, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025. George was born on May 22, 1935, in Krndija, Yugoslavia to George and Karolina Wittman.

George grew up in Köflach, Austria after fleeing Yugoslavia with his family during the reign of Tito and his expulsion of ethnic Germans after WWII. As a young teen, George worked as an apprentice at the local tailor. The Wittman family, including father, George Sr., who was a prisoner of war in Yugoslavia for 3 years, immigrated to the United States by ship with the support of the Catholic church. George arrived in New York City at the age of 16 along with his three younger brothers, mother and father, and continued on to Cleveland, Ohio where they settled. Invigorated with newfound patriotism, he enlisted and served in the US Army for two years.  After he was discharged, George took a chance on a blind date and met the love of his life, Elaine Kathryn Kohar and they were married September 6, 1958. They moved to Southern California and spent many wonderful years there, raising their three children. George, along with his brothers, used their exceptional machining skills to launch Witko Engineering, a successful tool & die company. George was a skilled craftsman and man of character who prioritized his family, faith, and devotion.

In the early 1990's George moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to be closer to family and spend time with his future grandchildren and he became affectionately known as “Opa”. Upon moving to the Denton area, George continued working as a machinist while supporting his children and grandchildren along with Elaine. George was very devoted to his family, he was a staple at the sporting events of his grandchildren and would often watch them while his children and their families fulfilled their commitments to the military and respective jobs. George led by example and his quiet confidence inspired all who came in contact with him. There was never a person he would not get along with and his infectious humor was sure to improve any situation.

George was a steadfast Catholic and a dedicated member of St. Mark's Church in Denton, TX for more than 30 years.  His faith was a hallmark of his life as he and Elaine were known by most at the 11:30 mass when they sat at the same location with their family. He lived a life with Christlike humility and kindness, which all recognized.

George is survived by his three children, George (Mary) Wittman, Linda Green, Laurie (Bryan) Dickson, grandchildren Preston Green, Hannah (Ashton) Winters, Halley Dickson, Nolan Wittman, brother Mike Wittman, and many nieces nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife Elaine Wittman, beloved parents, brothers John and Paul and grandchild Cameron Wittman. A Rosary & Viewing will be held on September 6th, 2025 at 9:45 am and a Memorial Mass following at 10:00 am at St. Mark Catholic Church in Argyle, TX. He will be laid to rest on September 11th, 2025 at the Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery at 11:00 am.
