Geraldine's Obituary

Geraldine “Gerri” Sanders, 82, of Grinnell died Friday, December 5, 2025, at Mayflower Community Homes.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, 3:00 PM at Westfield Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Cox-Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be given in her name.

Gerri was born on March 8, 1943, to Thumen and Bessie (McGinty) Burkett in Greenbrier, Arkansas. She attended school, until her family moved to Grinnell, where she finished her education. On June 1, 1963, Gerri married Edgar Sanders at the Malcom Methodist Church. She worked in dining services at Grinnell College for 39 years. Gerri also worked at the Grinnell College Post Office and later at Wal-Mart for 5 years, until finally retiring. Ed and Gerri loved to go camping, fishing, playing cards and just enjoyed the company of friends. Gerri always looked forward to their motorcycle vacations. She cherished every moment with her grandchildren. They were the light of her life.

Gerri will be remembered by her son, Mark Sanders of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Breanna Sanders of Grinnell, Jena Sanders of Brooklyn, Gage Sanders of Grinnell and Jacob Sanders of Grinnell; sisters, Mattie Duncan and Glenda Haslet; brother, Shelby Burkett; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar Roy in 2020; son, Matthew Sanders in 2010; brothers, Dwight, Doyle, Vance and Carroll Burkett; and sister, Jennie Reed.
