Gilbert Alonzo Bergman was born at home on a small farm in Benton County, Missouri, near the town of Cole Camp on November 19, 1928.  He was the fourth child born to Christian Reuben Godfried Bergman and Esther Mae Bergman (nee Borchers).  Gilbert had 4 brothers and 4 sisters.  His family moved to Sedalia, Missouri in 1944 where he completed high school.  Gilbert enlisted in the U. S. Army in February of 1951 and served in the Korean conflict. On May 23, 1952, he married Ruth Anna Katherine Bergmann of Sedalia, Missouri and started their family in Phoenix, Arizona. There, they raised 3 children, Douglas Keith, Stephanie Kay and Christine Marie. The family moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1971.  After Gilbert retired from a career with the United States Postal Service, he enjoyed a long retirement of gardening, golf, woodworking and grandchildren.  He volunteered extensively for blood services and both he and Ruth were active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.Gilbert is predeceased by his wife, Ruth, who passed away in March of 2019.  He is survived by his children, son Doug Bergman (wife Deborah), daughter Steph Roland (husband Stan), and daughter Chris Scott (husband Brad), and their children and grandchildren.Gilbert passed away in his home, as was his wish, at the age of 96 in the early hours of Sunday, September 14, 2025. His ashes and those of his wife will be interred together at Valley of the Sun Memorial Park’s Veterans Garden of Honor.  The family is grateful to Banner Home Health and Sage Hospice for their care.Instead of honoring Gilbert with flowers or memorial gifts, be gentle and kind to those around you, just as Gilbert was during his time among us.
