Harold “Bert” Smith, 93, passed away baptized into the hope of Christ’s resurrection on Thursday, March 19, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and a lifelong passion for the game of baseball. From a very young age, Bert found his place on the ballfield alongside his brother, Donald. A natural athlete, he could play any position, though he was most often found on the mound as a pitcher or commanding the infield at shortstop. His talent, love for the game, and competitive spirit carried him through decades of play-continuing well into his 80th year. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the sport, Bert was inducted into the Corkball Hall of Fame in 2019 and the St. Louis Indian Ball Hall of Fame in 2005.Bert’s life was shaped not only by baseball but by his service and devotion to family. After proudly serving in the United States Army in Germany, he returned home and met the love of his life, Mary Caroline Smith. Together, they built a strong and loving family, raising five children in the South St. Louis community. Bert was a devoted husband and father, instilling in his children the values of hard work, commitment, and the importance of family. Bert was also a longtime member of Teamsters Local Union 600, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. As a player, coach, and lifelong fan, Bert’s connection to baseball went far beyond the field. He shared his knowledge generously, mentored young players, and remained a constant presence in the game he loved. Whether playing, coaching, or cheering from the sidelines, Bert brought people together through baseball and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.He will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of family, and the joy he found in every inning of life. Bert was the beloved husband of the late Mary Caroline Smith (nee O'Leary); father of Laura (Charlie) Vaporean, Carol (Paul Galen) Smith, Kevin (Cathi) Smith, Janice (Bob) Zerega, and the late William Smith; grandfather of Cindy (Matt) Deane, David (Candace) Vaporean, Brian (Allison) Vaporean, Mark (Claire) Vaporean, Daniel Vaporean, Michael (Hailey) Bullock, Kristina Palmer, Terran Smith, Taylor Smith, Tanner Smith, Shelly Smith, Ryan Smith, Nicole Smith, Julia (Adam) Dore, Vincent Zerega, and Alaina Zerega; great-grandfather of twelve; dear uncle, cousin, and many friends, teammates, and players whose lives he touched.
