Hattie's Obituary

Hattie Mae McGee was born on March 9, 1926, in Sharkey County, Mississippi to the late Nellie Willis and Hayes McGee. Hattie was raised in Mississippi alongside her siblings: Virmer, Lily, Hazel and Anthony. She developed the resilience and determination that would guide her throughout her life.

In 1944 seeing opportunity in a broader future, Hattie Left Mississippi and moved to Detroit. In 1950 she relocated to Chicago IL where she would spend nearly five decades building her life while raising her family and working diligently. She was employed at Nation Bakery in Chicago and later worked at the children's hospital of Chicago. Throughout her years of employment, Hattie also had multiple jobs, never shying away from hard work. She believed in earning her way and took pride in providing through honest labor.

In 1998 Hattie moved to Tampa Florida. Beginning a new chapter Hattie became a member of the Brandon Seventh-day Adventist Church, where her love for God and Bible studies grew. Her faith remained her source of strength and was always her foundation. 

In 2016 Hattie relocated to Gary IN, where she spent her final years surrounded by family and acquired friends.

Hattie was strong, strict, stylish, funny and beautifully feisty. She carried herself with dignity and class and believed in doing things the right way. 

Hattie wasn't fond of anything cheap, whether it be clothes, efforts or character. She always valued quality and lived her life by high standards. She loved cooking and nurturing her family through meals prepared with care. Hattie enjoyed dressing well, attending church and bible readings. Even though she was stern at times, she also had a sweet side that revealed itself in quiet love and protection.

On February 18, 2026, Hattie peacefully entered eternal restarted nearly a century of faith, strength and unwavering standards. 

Hattie was preceded in death by parents, Nellie Willis and Hayes McGee; sisters: Virmer, Lily and Hazel; brother. Anthony, Grandson, Larry McGee great-grandson, Joe McGee Jr; nieces: Pat and Arnnette; nephews: Allen Arthur Willie, James and Timothy. 

She leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter, Gayle McGee; two grandchildren: Joe McGee and Tinika Miller; three nieces: Geraldine, Susan and Charlene; one nephew, Matthew; eleven great grand children: seven greatgreat grandchildren: close friends: Margaret Finley, Ricky Martin and Jemima Herron and a host extended love ones.
