Haydn's Obituary

Haydn A. Fox Sr. passed away on June 1, 2011, at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce, TX.Haydn was born on October 22, 1918, in Winona, MS, to Ethel Hamilton and John Fox.  His parents and a brother, Dr. Vernon Fox Sr., preceded him in death.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma J. (Gibson) Fox; three children:  Dr. Haydn A. Fox, Jr. and wife Jane, Lynda J. Ratliff and husband Ernie, and John G. Fox and wife Sherry.  Also surviving are his grandchildren:  Chad Ratliff and wife Lisa, Becky Tolleson and husband Mike, Blake Fox, Nick Robinson, Charlie Blackburn, Joann Warren, and Lyla Warren; his great-grandchildren: Justin and Olivia Tolleson, Allie Ratliff, Gage Blackburn and Sarah Bolin.  He is also survived by two nieces:  Karen Root and husband Dick, and Lorraine Myers and husband Bill; and, one nephew, Vernon Fox Jr. and wife Dee.Haydn was in the Army Air Corp. during WWII.  He served as a meteorologist and pioneered in the use of radar for meteorology.  After completing his military service, he worked for the National Weather Service as a meteorologist and retired after 33 years of service.  His career took him to Michigan, Minnesota, Alaska, Colorado, Illinois and Missouri.  Toward the end of his career, he was the meteorologist-in-charge of the Weather Office in southern Illinois and was over regional weather forecasting and forecasting river stages for both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.  He was active in his church, Lions and Elks Clubs and sponsored several weather warning training seminars for the public and also for local and state police officers.  He and his wife (Norma) retired in Cape Girardeau, MO, and later moved to Commerce, TX, to be near family.Visitation will be held at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011.  Graveside services will follow at Sonora Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. with Bro. Mike Ryer as officiant.
