Husher Kelton Edmonds Sr., 91, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019, in Palm Coast, FL, where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law, since 1997.
Husher was born in Barlow, KY on October 3, 1927, the only son of the late Celestia Hines Edmonds. He is survived by two sons: Husher K. Edmonds Jr. and wife, Sheila, North Carolina and Cleo L. Edmonds, New York and one daughter, Eva C. Cropper and husband Julian, Florida; one sister, Lola Kyle, Ohio; three grandchildren, Dr. Marsha Edmonds, Ashley Edmonds and Candyce Grant; three great-grandchildren Tazia, Tiana, and Tyler. He also leaves loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
As a young adult, Husher was an amateur boxer, but he excelled in baseball, where he earned the nickname “Jack”.
After high school, “Jack” joined the United States Navy. He served four years and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953. He had said, “I traveled the world, but found my true love, Celio Britt, in South Carolina, USA.” They were married April 1952. In November 1971, Celio, proceeded Husher in death.
Husher and Celio moved to Brooklyn, NY, in 1953 and later settled in Springfield Gardens, NY. Husher retired from the New York City Transit Authority, Maintenance Department. He was an outstanding pitcher on the department’s softball team. He helped the team win numerous championships, taking home First, Second and Third Place trophies. He enjoyed playing ball, but his favorite game was Bid Whist! He liked to say, “We’re beatin’ and teachin’.” It didn’t matter who was his partner.
We will remember daddy’s big heart, his generous spirit, his beautiful smile and his love for his family. Husher enjoyed life and made everyone laugh. He made everyone feel better just by being around him. He will be missed dearly.
There will be visitation on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at Clymer Funeral Home & Cremations, 39 Old Kings Road North, Palm Coast, FL 32137. Visitation will also be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, on Sunday, March 3, 2019, immediately followed by the funeral service, officiated by Pastor Alvin Britt. Interment will be 12:00 pm, in the Pine Lawn section, Grave Marker #3A 4711, at the Long Island National Cemetery, 2040 Wellwood Ave., Farmingdale, NY 11735.
