Mrs. Irma Madeline Nichols age 97 of Crane Creek Rd. Young Harris, GA. passed away peacefully on Monday August 25, 2025, at the Pruitt Health Care of Blue Ridge facility following a brief illness. Mrs. Nichols was born on May 22, 1928, in Parma, OH., the daughter of the late Thadius Beck and the late Lena Anthony Beck. Irma served as the Chief Registrar with the board of elections for Towns County for over twenty years. She also served in leadership roles for several community and civic organizations over the years, none more impactful as being a founding member and co-chairman of the Young Harris Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary where she dedicated many hours, sweat, blood, and tears in support of the fire department from its inception. She was always very active in her church, serving as a Deacons wife for over forty years, serving as a Sunday school teacher on multiple occasions through the years, directed multiple vacation bible schools at area churches, and was still serving recently as church treasurer and member at Revival Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 72 years, William “Howard” Nichols Sr. in 2017 and a son, William “Bill” Howard Nichols Jr. in 1998. Mrs. Nichols was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend.
Surviving Mrs. Nichols are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Welling of Young Harris, three grandchildren, Angela and Gene Vinez, Aaron and Kimberly Welling, John Adam Nichols II, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday August 31, 2025, at 2:30 pm at the Revival Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Gaines and Rev. Kevin Garrett officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Aaron Welling, Adam Nichols, Eric McConnell, Sammy Hughes, Bill Spencer, and Randy Thomas; both Richard and Samuel Welling will serve as honorary pallbearers. Special music will be presented by The Soulseekers and Heather Henderson. Interment will follow in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery where she will rest with her beloved husband Howard. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Revival Baptist Church in Irma’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-8:00 pm.
