Irving's Obituary

Irving (Ted) Bogsrud of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20, 2018. He was 95 years old. After serving in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, he married the love of his life, Lillian (Lee) Lang, and was her devoted husband until she died in 2009.Ted was a musician, a trumpet player. After discharge from the Navy, he toured the country with big bands under Clyde Thornhill and Orrin Tucker. When his traveling days came to an end, Ted earned music degrees from New York University and East Carolina University and started a long teaching career. He was a gifted and beloved teacher, and as the band director and Supervisor of Music Education in Chesapeake, Va., Ted taught generations of young people to make and love music. After retirement, Ted and Lee moved to Smith Mountain Lake and he became active in the Roanoke music scene. He played in local big bands under Freddie Le and Dee Roberts. Ted was “in the pit” for many Mill Mountain musicals. He was the leader of and played in the Kazim Shrine Band (the Nobelmen) for 25 years. His brass quintet, The Smith Mountain Lake Antique Brass, performed at many events in and around Roanoke. As Ted grew older, he continued to make music, playing his trumpet in the Roanoke Valley Community Band and the Let’s Dance Band until he was 94.Ted is survived by three daughters, Jill, Diane and Linda, who will love him until they themselves are dust. These daughters are deeply grateful to the staff of the VA Medical Center Inpatient Hospice Unit for the outstanding care and deep respect they extended to our Dad during his final weeks.Memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, c/o Kazim Shrine Temple, 628 West Campbell Ave., Roanoke, VA 24016.
