Hot Shot always had a twinkle in his eyes and was such a sweet and kind gentleman. He will be remembered forever by all who knew him. My heart goes out to his family, whom I have been fortunate to know for well over 60 years. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace.

J.L. “Hotshot” Stone, 94, passed away at his ranch in Archer County after a long and full life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and a spirit that never dimmed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the First Baptist Church in Holliday.
Hotshot was born September 2, 1931on his family’s farm at Blackflat, Texas, to Ola Mae and Ben Stone. Growing up on the family farm, he learned the value of hard work, honesty, and taking care of the people around him. His upbringing at Blackflat and Dundee were some of his most fond memories he shared with his brothers and sisters, B.W., T.H., Abby Jo, Juanita, LouElla, Ann, Dan and Sue. Hotshot’s roots ran deep in the land and community he loved. His nickname, Hotshot, became part of him at just three years old, when his grandfather bought him a pair of Hotshot brand overalls. The name stuck for more than nine decades, a perfect match for the spark and determination he carried throughout his life.
A man of many trades, Hotshot spent his years as a cattleman, welder, and local businessman running various ventures with the same honesty and unwavering work ethic that shaped his character. Whether it was cattle or Caterpillar dozers, he worked with grit and quiet confidence.
For 35 years, he shared his life with his beloved wife, Maryann Stone, whose love and companionship was his greatest blessing. Together with Jory, Justin and Jerret they built a home with the kind of partnership that stands the test of time.
Hotshot also leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Sue Price, his three sons, Steve Stone, Greg and Brenda Stone, and Kyle and Marla Stone, who carry forward his strength, resilience and values. He was a proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, each of whom brought him joy and pride. His family will remember his stories, his guidance, and his ability to literally be able to fix anything with baling wire and duct tape.
To those who knew him, Hotshot was more than his occupations, he was a steady presence, a problem-solver, and a man who lived life on his own terms. He was someone people could count on, whether it was lending a hand, sharing a story, or offering advice drawn from a lifetime of experience. His legacy lives on in the land he worked, the skills he passed down, and the generations who follow in his footsteps.
